In the hopes that she would never need them, her father taught her how to defend herself and how to think quickly. She required all of it and more as civilization collapsed around her. Nothing she had experienced up to this point had prepared her for the irrational acts of violence, the brutality, and the cruelty of a famished and helpless populace turning against one another.
