Alphonse Daudet's novels established him as the most successful writer in France by the end of the XIX century; but it was the LETTERS, first published in book form in 1869, which remained his favourite creation and has proved his most lasting. Throughout his working life in Paris Daudet never lost his almost umbilical attachment to Provence. These tales of that region are characterised by a tenderness and delicacy, a wistfulness and wry humour, which give moving substance to his claim that to invent, for him, was to remember.
Skuespilforfatteren Règis de Fagan er efter mange års ægteskab blevet skilt fra sin kone, som han har de to halvvoksne piger Rose og Nina sammen med. Skilsmissen er efter gensidig overenskomst - Régis har ladet som om han havde et udenomsægteskabeligt forhold med en skuespillerinde for at tilfredsstille den franske skilsmisselovgivning. Han har ved skilsmissedommen fået lov til at have pigerne hveranden søndag.Régis' tilværelse drejer sig efter skilsmissen i høj grad om disse søndage med pigerne, men han må efterhånden indse, at moderen gradvis "erobrer" dem fra ham, samtidig med at hun stadig søger at styre hans liv, ikke mindst ved at påvirke pigernes holdning til en ny hustru.
