The respiratory muscles are skeletal muscles that power the vital function of pulmonary ventilation. Many COPD patients have impaired respiratory muscle function which has a significant adverse effect on their lives. Impairment of inspiratory muscle function is of particular importance in COPD patients. Two treatment types are currently available for impaired inspiratory muscle function in COPD patients: inspiratory muscle training and surgery. Inspiratory muscle function can improve with specific training.
