Alma Svendsen på Katholt, der var mor til Emil, skrev alle hans skarnsstreger op i blå stilebøger, som hun gemte i sin kommodeskuffe. Men de ligger i den gamle kommode den dag i dag, alle de blå stilebøger på nær tre, som Emil forsøgte at sælge til lærerinden i søndagsskolen engang, han skulle bruge nogle penge. Da hun ikke ville købe dem lavede han papirsbåde af dem og lod dem sejle ned ad Katholtbækken, og siden er der ingen, der har set dem.
Karlsson på taget er, hvis han selv skal sige det, en usædvanligt smuk, gennemklog og tilpas tyk mand i sin bedste alder. Han bor i et hus oppe på taget, tæt på Lillebror, som er en helt almindelig lille dreng. Karlsson er en meget lille og trind herre, og han kan flyve helt af sig selv. Lillebror synes, at Karlsson er den bedste til alt. Han er i hvert fald verdens bedste legekammerat. Jens Jacob Tychsen, som er uddannet fra Skuespillerskolen ved Aarhus Teater, har indlæst bogen. Han har medvirket i en række forestillinger på teatre over hele landet, ligesom han har lagt stemme til reklamer, dokumentarudsendelser og tegnefilm for børn.
