Focuses on Allied efforts to drive Italy out of the war, defeat German forces in the country and to push up through the Italian perninsula to threaten the German under-belly. Three Indian divisions participated in this Allied efforts. They distinguished themselves in the battles of Sangaro, Cassino, the Liri Valley, and the Gothic Line.

Examines the circumstances under which Burma was lost to the Japanese in 1942. Primarily it is an account of the fighting of Indian troops who struggled against all odds and avoided extermination. These early reverses, however, encouraged the Indian Army to make vigorous preparations to fight the Japanese successfully.
