Charles heeft gedwongen regelmatig zijn school moeten verlaten om te werken in een schoensmeerfabriek. Hij vond het daar verschrikkelijk. Later is hij gaan schrijven over de moeilijke omstandigheden waarin arbeiders zich begaven. Uiteindelijk is hij gaan studeren aan de Wellington House Academy, waarna hij op zijn vijftiende een baan kreeg op een advocatenkantoor waar hij zichzelf stenografie leerde. Hij schreef voor de krant en zijn werk werd later gebundeld. Dickens werd de eerste persoon die van zijn schrijven kon gaan leven. In zijn boeken stelde hij, met gebruik van humor, sociale misstanden aan de kaak. Op 9 juni 1870 overleed Charles Dickens op 58-jarige leeftijd.
