Le thème principal de Dombey et Fils concerne l'orgueil démesuré d'un père que suit, après bien de tragiques turbulences, sa rédemption. Les trois-cents premières pages concernent essentiellement les relations existant entre ce père et son fils, le Petit Paul, qui se languit et meurt, et l'amour exclusif que se portent Paul et sa s¿ur Florence que Mr Dombey néglige sans retenue. Le reste du roman concerne plutôt la relation père-fille que le malheur finit par rapprocher, Mr Dombey, en effet, perdant de sa superbe sous les coups du sort et cédant enfin à l'affection restée sans faille de Florence. Dans l'ensemble, malgré des passages comiques comme il s'en trouve dans toute l'¿uvre de Dickens, Dombey et Fils est un roman d'humeur sombre qui oppose symboliquement le foyer aride de Mr Dombey au rayonnement affectueux de la famille Toodle et au luminaire qu'est l'établissement nautique dirigé par Solomon Gills, l'oncle Sol, au nom prédestiné.La femme de M. Dombey, riche négociant orgueilleux, vient d'accoucher d'un garçon. Un garçon ! enfin il a un héritier qui saura reprendre son affaire. Certes, il avait déjà une fille, Florence, mais une fille... Malheureusement, son épouse décède des suites de cet accouchement, et M. Dombey met tout son attachement et ses espoirs dans Paul, son fils tandis qu'il n'a jamais éprouvé pour sa fille que gêne et indifférence. D'ailleurs, les liens entre Paul et Florence le dérangent.
