"C. over de Linden, Chief Superintendent of the Royal Dockyard at the Helder, possesses a very ancient manuscript, which has been inherited and preserved in his family from time immemorial, without any one knowing whence it came or what it contained, owing to both the language and the writing being unknown." This is how Dr. J. G. Ottema who translated the old frisian text into dutch begins his preface. Cornelius over de Linden claimed to have inherited the strange manuscript from his grandfather. It tells a story of vast scope taking in hundreds of years of the history of the children of Frya, from the sinking of Aldland that the sailors call Atland to the time of Caesar. Whether it is a suppressed alternative history or a creative invention to rival 'The Lord of the Rings' it is a fascinating and worthwhile book. This edition has the full English and Frisian text, the introduction and preface from the 1876 edition and a map of the world as known to the ancients.
