Military authors have entered the mainstream science fiction genre and continue to leave their mark. David Drake pays homage to his own sub-genre by collecting ten stories of men-at-arms by writers including Harry Harrison, Joe Haldeman, Gene Wolfe, Keith Laumer, Richard C. Matheson and himself.
"David Drake [is] the reason a lot of people got started reading military science fiction, because it's always a good idea to start with the best."--David Weber

When the Republic of Cinnabar doesn't have enough battleships to deal with all the crises in its war with the Alliance, it sends the next best thing: Commander Daniel Leary and his friend, the spy Adele Mundy.
Daniel Leary is a lieutenant in the Cinnabar Navy. Adele Mundy, whose family was massacred by the Government. Kostroma, which is under threat of invasion. Daniel, Adele, and the crew they gather aren't much to stand in the way of an invasion fleet. They have nothing on their side but each other and heaven help whatever tries to stand in their way!
David Drake chronicles the lives of ordinary Parisians during WWII, drawing on diaries and reminiscences of people who endured these years. From his account emerge the broad rhythms and shifting moods of the city and the contingent lives of resisters, collaborators, occupiers, and victims who, unlike us, could not know how the story would end.
Violence racks Cinnabar. In desperate times, Lt. Daniel Leary must serve under a paranoid officer, and Officer Adele Mundy is drawn into a conspiracy worringly similar to the one that led to her parents' massacre.
Captain Daniel Leary and his cybrarian friend Adele Mundy think they've earn the quiet life. But there is a rebellion in a distant, but politically critical, star system and high officials are determined to get the lifelong friends involved.
