Llanaber is a microcosm of the US. As with Lorenz' 'butterfly effect' what happens in the US effects Llanaber, especially as the mad old bat that runs the parish council, Mrs. Dorothy 'Binky' Trim, will plagiarize even the craziest Trump idea. Village life is documented in the village 'letter' written by the parish council's Foreign Secretary, David Smith. The characters and events in the village may seem bizarre beyond belief but take a closer look. Are they really that different from what's happening in 'the real world?'
Arthur Kenney-Herbert was a cavalry officer who served in India during the British Raj. Using the pen name "Wyvern", he wrote Culinary Jottings For Madras in which he gives instructions to British memsahibs on how to manage their servants, give refined dinners, and make Anglo-Indian curries. The book was a huge success, and made Wyvern famous in colonial India. When he retired to England at the rank of colonel, Wyvern built on his reputation as a culinary authority. He founded a cookery school, gave cooking demonstrations, and wrote books and articles for prestigious magazines. In this lively and fascinating biography, food historian and author of The Curry House website David Smith charts Wyvern's life and times, recreates his classic recipe for Madras Chicken Curry, and considers his legacy as a Victorian celebrity chef.

In the Gospel of Luke, we hear the angel's timeless proclamation to Mary, "Rejoice, highly favored one, the Lord is with you; blessed are you among women" (Luke 1:28). Every generation of Christians must contemplate these angelic words, for Mary is the Theotokos and Mother of our Lord. Every culture must confront her mystery. Through its worship services, the Church gives us many opportunities to consider the place of the Mother of Jesus Christ in our lives. The Paraklesis service, sung every day during the Virgin's Lent, offers the perfect vehicle to do just that. Sung from the first to the fifteenth of August, and at other times of illness and distress, the Paraklesis is a supplicatory song, a canon of praise, a series of poems celebrating with honor the Mother of Jesus our Lord. Fr. David Smith shares with us his own personal meditations on Mary, based upon his reflections on the Paraklesis service.
British Rail's architectural legacy is evaluated, showing the contribution of UK railway stations to the development of mainstream twentieth century architecture. From the author of "British Rail Designed 1948-1997".
Insect remains from archaeological sites can tell us an astonishing amount about the past. This ranges from lists of which species were present, via intimate details of the parasitological state of Londoners of the time, to socially and economically significant reconstructions of the environment and climate. However, many insects are unfamiliar to most people, and the methods used to glean information from their fossils can be complex. In this study the author makes us feel much more familiar with the creatures themselves, and presents descriptions of site results, explanations of methodology, and outlines his conclusions. In addition we understand how the details of remains for single sites can be woven together into bigger stories. The results from London, with their long time span and geographical range, present an excellent basis for an accessible account of this kind. This book will bring them to a wider audience, which is commendable. But even more importantly it will serve to convince more archaeologists that bioarchaeology in general, and work on insect remains in particular, is worthwhile and more than justifies its cut of any excavation project budget.
