The Dream is RealYou've heard and watched the games, now go behind the scenes to get the skinny on the humor, drama and strategy behind them. The Dream is Real is a look back at the award-winning career of broadcaster Bob Davis. From the days of his childhood watching 17-year-old and future New York Yankee Hall-of-Famer Mickey Mantle play shortstop for the Class D Independence (Kan.) Yankees; to calling an NAIA national basketball championship; broadcasting eight NCAA Final Fours; doing an Orange Bowl champion; and being in the booth for major league baseball; sports has been his passion.Davis uses his folksy style, quick wit and engaging humor -- just as he did on the air -- as he looks back at the games and people he met along the way. His story is complemented by the memories of coaches, athletes, broadcasting peers, family and friends for this trip back down memory lane which included Davis broadcasting nearly 5,000 games over 48 years. Those contributors include Bill Self, Kevin Harlan, Roy Williams, Mitch Holthus, Tony Muser, Denny Matthews, Mark Mangino, Jim Nantz, Larry Brown, Dick Vitale, Glen Mason, Ryan Lefebrve, Danny Manning, Holly Rowe, Mike Sweeney and a host of other sports personalities. And you'll also hear from people whose names weren't in lights, but nevertheless played an integral role in the story of Bob's life -- a Sunday school student, a high school football coach, his son Steven, co-workers, broadcasting partners and more. The journey began when Davis had to tell his dad he was quitting law school after one year to pursue a career in broadcasting. From there we learn of his receiving 50 rejection letters before landing a DJ position at KAYS in Hays, Kan. He parlayed that into a 16-year stint where he became one of the most popular people in Hays, serving as the conduit between the fans and their beloved Hays High Indians, Thomas More Prep Monarchs and Fort Hays State Tigers. His talents were well-known and in demand and his next calling was a 32-year run as the Voice of the Kansas Jayhawks. He also managed to find time to spend 20 years working at KMBZ radio during that time. Davis capped his career by broadcasting the sport which attracted him to the profession as he spent 16 years in radio and television with the Kansas City Royals.Bob Davis is a people person and readers will enjoy the meeting and reading about the characters he introduces throughout the story of his life. You'll learn about the size 20 EEEE shoe that sat upon the register at Goodwin's Sportings Goods. There are the numerous stories and touching memories involving long-time broadcast partners Max Falkenstien and Paul Splittorff. Of course, there are the many humorous on-air and off-air interactions that are certain to leave readers in stitches. Then there are the road trips -- the hijinks experienced on planes, trains and automobiles will leave you in stitches. Lastly, you will get to relive the outstanding performances and competitions that captured our attention and imagination for almost half a century.Bob Davis is in more halls of fame than one can count. After reading The Dream is Real, you'll come to learn why he was so highly regarded as a broadcaster. But you'll also understand why he is considered a hall-of-fame person. All he ever wanted to do is tell stories about sports on the radio. And we as fans are fortunate to have had the opportunity to listen in.

What is Art? It''s widely accepted that art serves an important function in society. But the concept falls under such an absurdly large umbrella and can manifest in so many different ways. Art can be self-indulgent, goofy, serious, altruistic, evil, or expressive, or any number of other things. But how can it truly make lasting, positive change? In Why Art?, acclaimed graphic novelist Eleanor Davis (How To Be Happy) unpacks some of these concepts in ways both critical and positive, in an attempt to illuminate the highest possible potential an artwork might hope to achieve.
A volume in Contemporary Language EducationSeries Editor: Terry A. Osborn, University of South Florida, Sarasota-ManateeThis volume begins by locating critical inquiry within the epistemological and methodologicalhistory of second language study. Subsequent chapters portray researcher-participant explorationof identity and agency while challenging inequitable policies and practices. Research oninternationalization, Englishization, and/or transborder migration address language policies andknowledge production at universities in Hong Kong, Standard English and Singlish controversiesin Singapore, media portrayals of the English as an Official Language movement in South Korea, transnational advocacy in Japan, and Nicaraguan/Costa Rican South to South migration.Transnational locations of identity and agency are fore-fronted in narrative descriptions ofKorean heritage language learners, a discursive journey from East Timor to Hawaii, and a reclaimedlife history by a Chinese peasant woman. Labor union and GLBT legal work illustrate discourses that can hinder or facilitateagency and change. Hawaiian educators advocate for indigenous self-determination through revealing the political and socialmeanings of research. California educators describe struggles at the front-lines of resistance to policies and practices harmful tomarginalized children. A Participatory Action Research (PAR) project portrays how Latina youth in the U.S. "resist woundinginscriptions" of the intersecting emotional and physical violence of homes, communities, and anti-immigrant policies and attitudes.Promoting agency through drawing on diversity resources is modeled in a bilingual undergraduate PAR project. The volume as awhole provides a model for critical research that explores the multifaceted and evolving nature of language identities while placingthose traditionally known as participants at the center of agency and advocacy.
This book covers the crucial aspects of theoretical and experimental approaches for Si-based spintronic materials. The theory parts emphasize on two first-principles methods - the GW method to improve the insulating gaps of the half metals which are a class of materials ideal for spintronic applications, and the linear response theory to calculate electric and magnetic susceptibilities. Three growth methods for doping transition metal elements in alloy and layered forms in Si will be focused on. Also three methods for characterization will be presented emphasizing on how to interpret experimental results. Finally, recent progress made in the Si-based spintronic materials will be discussed. This book is intended for researchers and graduate students who are interested in designing and growing new spintronic materials, in particular, silicon-based.
The creative industries are a growing economic as well as cultural force. This book investigates their organizational dynamics and shows how companies structure their work processes to incorporate creative employees' needs for autonomy while at the same time controlling and coordinating their output.
As the pace of change in the workplace continues to accelerate, individuals are under more pressure to learn new things than ever before. While most people realize they have more to learn, many have trouble translating that anxious need into purposeful action. Managing Your Own Learning demonstrates how to analyze previous learning, design an action plan for future learning, expand opportunities for learning, and use libraries and the Internet effectively to become a lifelong learner. James and Adelaide Davis detail seven major ways of learning: learning new skills, learning from presentations, learning to think, learning to solve problems and make decisions, learning in groups, learning through virtual realities, and learning from experience. They also provide useful guidelines for maximizing results by becoming an effective, active participant in learning. They explain, for example, how learning in a group can be enhanced by knowing how a group works and considering factors such as group size, cohesion, task and process behavior, and participant roles, as well as the things that can go wrong in groups, such as conflict and apathy. For each of the seven ways of learning, the authors tell what is unique about it, how learning actually takes place, and how it can be augmented in each situation. They reveal how the theory behind each way of learning originated, what researchers have learned about it, and what the individual's role is as a participant. And at the end of each chapter, they include a list of ten things that anyone can do to get the most from that particular type of learning. No matter what our previous experiences with learning may have been, we all must become self-directed learners if we are to succeed in this new era. Managing Your Own Learning provides step-by-step, proven advice on how to succeed in the 21st century workplace by becoming a proactive, goal-directed, perpetual learner.
This book is about a recently developed class of strategies, known as the fence methods, which fits particularly well in non-conventional and complex model selection problems with practical considerations. The idea involves a procedure to isolate a subgroup of what are known as correct models, of which the optimal model is a member. This is accomplished by constructing a statistical fence, or barrier, to carefully eliminate incorrect models. Once the fence is constructed, the optimal model is selected from amongst those within the fence according to a criterion which can be made flexible. In particular, the criterion of optimality can incorporate consideration of practical interest, thus making model selection a real life practice.Furthermore, this book introduces a data-driven approach, called adaptive fence, which can be used in a wide range of problems involving determination of tuning parameters, or constants. Instead of relying on asymptotic theory, the fence focuses on finite-sample performance, and computation. Such features are particularly suitable to statistics in the new era.
