Statistical Mechanics is the extended version of McQuarrie's earlier text - Statistical Thermodynamics [USB 1984]. Statistical Mechanics [previously published by Longman Education] is a renowned accessible introduction to the subject.
The biggest change in the years since the first edition is the proliferation of computational chemistry programs that calculate molecular properties. McQuarrie presents step-by-step SCF calculations of a helium atom and a hydrogen molecule, in addition to including the Hartree-Fock method and post-Hartree-Fock methods.
Evolved from McQuarrie and Simon's best-selling Physical Chemistry: A Molecular Approach, this text follows a similar path by first covering the principles of quantum mechanics before engaging those ideas in the subsequent development of thermodynamics.
Comprised of more than 2000 problems and 700 worked examples that detail every single step, this text is exceptionally well adapted for self study as well as for course use.
