This book aims to give a clear and coherent understanding of the excitation mechanisms which excite cables in structures. A static and dynamic analysis is undertaken to investigate the behaviour of cables. A comprehensive theory is given for the free, linear vibrations of the suspended cable. Using this theory, a finite element model of several cable-stayed bridges are constructed with various cable configurations in a 2-D and 3-D environment. The effect of increasing the horizontal tension in the cables is analysed and the natural frequencies are compared. Design recommendations and mitigation methods are compared with international building codes. This book provides a extensive introduction into dynamics of cables and a must have guide for bridge engineers.
