I migrated to Johannesburg in South Africa from London when I was twenty-one years old. The air was sultry, and the smell of Africa hit my nostrils with a twang. I was not expecting it to be so soon. The sights and sounds of Africa have influenced my life and art since then. A great love of the African savanna lay in my bosom from that moment. Many days later, when my sister and I had collected ourselves, we wandered out to greet the African people in the town. The one thing that would prove to us that we were in Africa were the sweet-spoken natives. They were kind and very helpful through all my years there. Strangely, we would later find that the change in seasons did not occur-that was something to adjust to, which I never did.
