Kantelettaren runot ovat kalevalaista runomittaa, ja ne ovat toimineet suomalaisen kansanmusiikin inspiraationa julkaisustaan lahtien. Vuonna 1840 ilmestyneen teoksen lyyriset runot pohjautuvat Lonnrotin runonkeruumatkoihin Karjalassa.-

Ylioppilas Eero Jaasko kokosi Lonnrotin sananlaskut ja niiden selitykset kansien valiin. "e;Suomalaisia sananlaskuja"e; julkaistiin vuonna 1892. Juho Ahava kokosi ne "e;Suomalaisia kansanlauluja"e; -kirjaksi vuonna 1909.Teos sisaltaa seka tyttojen etta poikien lauluja. Laulujen sanoitukset kasittelevat esimerkiksi rakkautta ja rakkauden aiheuttamia huolia. Lonnrot kerasi kansanlauluja muun muassa Pohjois-Karjalasta ja Vienan Karjalasta.-

Elias Lönnrot tunnetaan ensisijaisesti työstään suomalaisen kansanrunouden parissa. Lönnrot oli kuitenkin myös lääkäri. "Suomalaisen talonpojan koti-lääkäri" on Lönnrotin kirjoittama lääkärikirja vuodelta 1839. Siinä opastetaan talonpojille sekä terveellisiä elämäntapoja että sairauksien kotihoitoa. Läpi käydään niin tapaturmien hoito kuin tavallisimmat ajan taudit parannuskeinoineen. Myös synnyttämiselle ja pienten lasten hoidolle on omat osansa."Heti synnytettyä pitää waimon luoda reidet yhteen ja laskea kumpiki kätensä watsalle lepäämään. Kun itse ei sitä woine, niin autettakoon muilta. Sittekun jälkimenot (jälkijuoksu, perkeet) owat yli menneet, pitää waimo warustettaman kohtuuskintiällä watsasiteellä ja nostettaman toiseen sänkyyn, jossa saapi hiljaisuudessa lewätä joutawilta wierailta ja onnen toiwotuksilta waiwaumatta."Elias Lönnrot (1802–1884) oli lääkäri ja kielentutkija, joka kokosi Suomen kansalliseepoksen "Kalevalan". Hän julkaisi "Kalevalan" lisäksi huiman määrän suomalaisia kansanlauluja ja sananlaskuja. Lönnrot teki ensimmäisen runonkeruumatkansa vuonna 1828 Hämeeseen, Savoon, Pohjois-Karjalaan ja Valamoon. Matkan aikana hän keräsi yli 6000 säettä suomalaisilta runonlaulajilta. Myöhemmin Lönnrot teki matkoja muun muassa Vienan Karjalaan. Lönnrot oli mukana perustamassa Suomalaisen Kirjallisuuden Seuraa vuonna 1831.

Niin tarkea han vasta luodulle maailmalle on, etta hanen kuolemansa tarkoittaisi kaikkeuden kuihtumista siihen paikkaan. Hanen syntymastaan alkaa seka tunnetun maailman etta Kalevala-eepoksen tarina.Kalevala on Suomen ja Karjalan tasavallan kansalliseepos. Se perustuu Elias Lonnrotin (1802-1884) vuodesta 1828 alkaen kokoamiin suomalais-karjalaisiin kansanrunoihin.-
