These chapters were first written and spoken in the face of death - when the only thing that was of any help at all was the Gospel itself. Helmut Thielicke faces the people of today with his own basic questions and offers the Christian faith as a vital answer. Delivered during World War II when one after another Dr Thielicke's meeting places were bombed, the lectures were not aimed at those who were conventional churchgoers and were not accustomed to the language and premises of the church. They were for people who had to be met on their own ground, and then introduced to the Christian faith. Dr Thielicke had a unique gift for finding that 'point of contact' and addressing the Gospel to that point. Every chapter is a model of how to latch on to modern ways of thinking and to make contact with the modern temper. With illustrations which have immediate meaning to men and women of the 21st century, the author brings the Christian affirmation to grips with questions in many areas, among them ethics, politics, the state, wart, atomic power, economics, sex and art. In a valuable epilogue, he sets forth his position with regard to this way of presenting the Christian message. His statement has implications for theological writing, pastoral care, preaching, and any form of proclaiming the Christian faith.
Thielicke here studies the themes of doubt and appropriation in modern Protestant thought. A leading advocate of dialectical theology, Thielicke examines the work of the great German Protestant religious philosophers from Lessing and Schliermacher through Barth and Tillich, probing these theologians' understanding of their context and how this tradition can impact our own engagement with our times. Clear, finely nuanced, historically and philosophically mature, this is a vital reflection on the history of theology and in systematic theology.
Combining insight and scholarship, this series of sermons and meditations on the Lord's Prayer offers the promise of seeing the world in a new way, through the power of prayer.
Combining scientific understanding and Christian insight, this is a comprehensive and magisterial discussion of the theology of sexual ethics, ranging from sexual relationships and gender equality to birth control and artificial insemination.
This first volume of Helmut Thielicke's important and influential ethics, presents the classical problems of Theological Ethics: the relationship of autonomous and Christian ethics, of secularism and faith, of dogmatics and ethics; ethical principles in the light of the Christian doctrines of creation and the fall; justification and sanctification; and ethical norms and the problem of natural law. As Paul Tillich accurately predicted in his review of Thielicke's work, it has become "a standard in ethical theology" and, as Paul Althaus observed, it is both profound and fully engaged in the concrete practice of Christian life.
Protestant and Catholic reviewers alike quickly testified to the importance of Helmut Thielicke's Politics, which brings his foundational theological insights to the contentious public square.Thielicke's Politics will be of major significance for all people from any denomination who are seriously interested in political science, social ethics, and questions having to do with war and peace, resistance and revolution, conscientious objection to military service, the state in welfare and education, and the role of the church in politics.
