Born in 1877 in Geneva, Switzerland, Isabelle Eberhardt became a rebel at an early age. Multilingual (French, German, and Russian), she began studying Arabic language and Islamic culture and eventually converted to Islam and joined a Qadiriyya Sufi brotherhood.
