Do you enjoy reading the original; using your own imagination to paint a picture of the world in your head; and forming your own opinions BEFORE you see the screen adaptation? Us too. In which case, now is the perfect time to read Jane Austen's 'Persuasion', before the 'Netflix' film adaptation staring Dakota Johnson, Cosmo Jarvis and Henry Golding hits screens in 2022.We often engage in the art of persuading others, but what is the role of persuasion in our own self deception? Twenty-seven year old Anne Elliot is well past the bloom of her youth and one of Jane Austen's eldest and quietest heroines. Having been persuaded by her friends to break off her happy engagement with the young naval officer Wentworth, whose station lies beneath her own, Anne is seemingly destined for spinsterhood. However, when Wentworth later reappears in Anne's life, tension and regret fill each page as we wonder whether the two former lovers will be able to move past their history and become reunited, or whether some decisions can never be undone. Set in the time of the Napoleonic wars, Anne is a woman who's insignificance restricts her life, yet her will and strong-minded character allows her to maneuver within her restrained circumstances to fight for her own triumph. Superbly witty, sarcastic and subtle, 'Persuasion' is Jane Austen's last novel. 'Netflix' aren't the first to make an adaptation - 'Persuasion' has previously inspired numerous movie and theatrical adaptations, including ITV's 2007 film directed by Simon Burke. -
Filled with macabre mansions, things that go bump in the night and a healthy dose of farce, 'Northanger Abbey' is Jane Austen's first novel and a satirical parody of the Gothic tradition. As far as being seventeen goes, daydreaming yourself away as center stage in some dramatic and intense story is pretty standard fare. Such is the case for sweet and naive Catherine Morland, who longs for the sort of adventure she reads about in the popular Gothic novels she is obsessed with. The friends and foes, lovers and haters of the party season in Bath provide adequate entertainment, but it's not until Catherine accepts an invitation to Northanger Abbey, the family home of devilishly handsome Henry Tilney, that things really start to get interesting. Dark and stormy nights abound at the creepy old mansion, setting the scene perfectly for Catherine to see the world from a new perspective and learn something about herself in the process. Brilliantly humorous at its very core, melodramatic, and suspenseful, this coming-of-age novel is one of Austen's greatest works and a must-read for fans of Gothic novels. -
Jane Austen famously wrote: "e;I am going to take a heroine whom no one but myself will much like."e;Emma Woodhouse is perhaps Jane Austen's most seductive and complicated character, filled with intrigue and uniqueness. Despite having decided to never marry, precocious Emma Woodhouse is a self proclaimed cupid that has taken it upon herself to help her friends find eligible matches. As it becomes evident that the judgement of her matchmaking abilities is misplaced, Emma finds herself at the heart of several romantic misadventures. 'Emma' is a novel about adolescent arrogance and the complicated nature of romantic relations. Commenting on 19th-century English society, 'Emma' is filled with Austen's literary wit and rich and memorable characters, making it the forerunner for contemporary romances. 'Emma' has been adapted for a modern audience several times, most recently in the 2020 Hollywood comedy-drama, starring Anya Taylor-Joy and Johnny Flynn. -
Emma is considered by many to be Austen's finest and most representative novel. The story of Emma Woodhouse's matchmaking, and her awakening to the true feelings of others as well as herself, is told with consummate wit and humour. This new edition contains lively notes and an introduction that explores how Austen transmutes the everyday into the revelatory.
