Battu aux élections de 1945, il reste un personnage politique influent en dénonçant "le rideau de fer" et l'expansionnisme soviétique. Réélu en 1951, il restera au pouvoir jusqu'en 1954 avant de se retirer de la vie politique. Prix Nobel de littérature en 1953, il meurt à Londres en 1965.
