The purpose of this Descartes Dictionary is to bring together as many as possible of the technical and special terms in Descartes’ writings with their definitions in Descartes’ own words. There are also implicit characterizations of the meanings of many words, and a handful of entries were included simply for their own sake—because Descartes had something interesting to say about his life and world. All of the entries, or almost all of them, have been newly translated for this volume. There are many reasons for preparing new translations: the language in the older translations is archaic and often inaccurate; many of Descartes’ most important works have never been translated into English; and modern translations vary in quality and style. What is most important, though, is that the old translations simply failed to pay attention to the technical language that Descartes used, and so blurred some of the most important distinctions that he made.

  • - If God Exists, Why Doesn't He Stop It?
    by John Morris
    £6.99

If God exists, does he care about his evolving, suffering world? Most answers are unsatisfactory. Morriss book is different: short but not superficial, strong in its science and philosophy, and realistic as a carer of a handicapped teenage grandson, still unable to walk and talk. Like Stephen Hawking and Einstein, John Morris also tries to explore the mind of God. Violence began with the Big Bang, long before legendary Adams sin. Morris believes God is typically non-interventionist but constantly interactive, operating creatively within his own physical laws, that allow freedom to particles and people, resulting in innovations and mutations, not always beneficial. Compared with other religions, Christs cross and resurrection give more historic hope in a God who suffers alongside us, to create good, responsible persons. Here is a 100-minute read, of interest to believers and atheists alike. Its brave conclusion gives reasonable grounds for thinking we live in a loving Gods best possible world, despite unavoidable suffering and natural disasters.

Unlike Richard Dawkins, the Revised Edition, Contemporary Creed sees no conflict between evolution and God, faith and modern science. But what sort of God creates a violent universe with a Big Bang almost 14 billion years ago and appears to do little or nothing to prevent built-in suffering and natural disasters like earthquakes, famines, disabled children and cancers? The Christian God leaves a lot unexplained! Some writers give superficial answers whereas Morris who helps care for his own handicapped grandson gets to the root of difficulties and succeeds in finding credible pathways through sixty problems of Christian beliefs and ethics. He writes for believers and unbelievers: for Christians like himself who admit their doubts, and for atheists and agnostics interested in life's big questions. His unusual format of 90% prose and 10% original poetry is entertaining, and the style straightforward everyday language, offering conclusions that are often open-ended, undogmatic. His systematic theology becomes a brief A-Z that may be read in any order for individual Bible study, or by house groups that want a provocative structure for lively discussion.
