Verne besøgte København i både 1861 og 1881, og en tur op til toppen af spiret på Vor Frelsers Kirke gjorde så stort et indtryk på ham, at han valgte at omtale det i værket Rejsen til Jordens indre.

Den argentinske stat har netop færdiggjort et fyrtårn på øen Isla de los Estados ved Kap Horn og landsætter det første hold fyrvogtere bestående af Vasquez, Felipe og Moriz til at passe fyret i tre måneder.På øen befinder sig dog en bande vragrøvere under ledelse af Kongre og hans næstkommanderende Carcante, som ikke viger tilbage for at narre skibe til forlis og myrde besætningerne for at stjæle skibenes last. Deres eget skib er imidlertid også forlist, og de kan ikke komme bort fra øen ved egen hjælp.Da avisodamperen Santa Fé forlader øen for først at vende tilbage tre måneder senere, er scenen sat til et drama på liv og død mellem fyrvogterne og vragrøverne.Den franske forfatter Jules Verne (1828-1905) er ofte blevet kaldt science fiction-romanens forgænger.
