This book explains how Japan became a democracy. Its main purpose is to offer more of a grassroots perspective and holistic understanding of Japan's democratization process and examine what it means for the nation today. The book is primarily focused on understanding contemporary Japan.
This book has two main purposes. The first is to correct the common understanding that the Japanese do not volunteer and to reveal Japan's vibrant civil society. Second, the book develops a model that explains patterns of volunteer participation around the world.
