Col suo grande poema cavalleresco, Boiardo ha saputo fondere il gusto cortese per le gesta dei Paladini con l’erudizione dell’Umanesimo maturo, confezionando un’opera che, nonostante sia stata oscurata dal successo dell’ariostesco "Orlando furioso" (suo debitore), ha mantenuto intatto il suo fascino cristallino. Alla corte di Carlo Magno si presenta Angelica, bellissima principessa del Catai, in cerca di aiuto contro i propri nemici. Basterebbe questa premessa, per far capire a chi legge che le intricate vicissitudini amorose di Orlando e Rinaldo – fra loro cugini e considerati i migliori cavalieri dell’imperatore – non si limiteranno qui a qualche banale scaramuccia. No, la sterminata fantasia di Boiardo ci trascinerà invece molto lontano dalla Francia: in un Estremo Oriente fiabesco in cui non mancheranno intrighi, incantesimi e mostri sovrumani...Matteo Maria Boiardo (1441-1494) nasce nella contea di Scandiano, in Emilia Romagna, infeudata alla sua famiglia da diverse generazioni. Cresciuto a Ferrara, nel 1451 rimane orfano di padre e torna alla città di origine, sotto la tutela dell’amato nonno Feltrino. È proprio quest’ultimo, umanista appassionato, ad assicurargli la più adeguata formazione. Nel 1461 Boiardo entra nella corte ferrarese di Borso d’Este, trascorrendo i successivi anni fra Roma e le varie corti tenute dalla dinastia (quella di Modena e di Reggio) e affermandosi come letterato. In quegli stessi anni firma le sue opere più note: "Amorum Libri Tres" (1476), "Le pastorali" (1484)" e, soprattutto, "Orlando innamorato", la cui versione completa uscirà postuma, nel 1495.

Like Ariosto's Orlando Furioso and Tasso's Jerusalem Delivered, Boiardo's chivalric stories of lords and ladies first entertained the culturally innovative court of Ferrara in the Italian Renaissance. Inventive, humorous, inexhaustible, the story recounts Orlando's love-stricken pursuit of "the fairest of her Sex, Angelica" (in Milton's terms) through a fairyland that combines the military valors of Charlemagne's knights and their famous horses with the enchantments of King Arthur's court. Today it seems more than ever appropriate to offer a new, unabridged edition of Boiardo's Orlando Innamorato, the first Renaissance epic about the common customs of, and the conflicts between, Christian Europe and Islam. Having extensively revised his earlier translation for general readers, Charles Ross has added headings and helpful summaries to Boiardo's cantos. Tenses have been regularized, and terms of gender and religion have been updated, but not so much as to block the reader's encounter with how Boiardo once viewed the world. Charles Stanley Ross has degrees from Harvard College and the University of Chicago and teaches English and comparative literature at Purdue University.
