Since Kazakhstan declared its independence in 1991 soon after the collapse of the former USSR, there have been sweeping changes to take the country along the path of democratization. In the process, the first post-Soviet Constitution was adopted in 1993 and in 1994, a parliamentary election was held that created in first post-independence national Parliament.
