Denne udgave udkom oprindeligt på dansk i 1945. Oscar Wildes (1854-1900) to fortællinger er oversat af Robert K. Adamsen, og de er illustreret af Adolf Hallman (1893-1968). Historien om spøgelset og den nye familie på slottet udgav Oscar Wilde i 1887.

Oscar Wilde - Dandy, Schriftsteller, Star der Londoner Society und gefeierter Bühnenautor des Fin de siècle - nimmt mit Dorian Gray auf geradezu tragische Weise Stationen seines eigenen Lebens vorweg. Der schöne junge Dorian bezaubert den Maler Basil Hallward und erliegt seinerseits dem Einfluss des geistreichen und zynischen Adeligen, Lord Henry. Als Basil ein Porträt von Dorian anfertigt, wünscht er sich selbstverliebt, dass nicht er, sondern das Porträt altern soll. Sein Wunsch wird erfüllt. Dorian führt ein zügelloses Leben, stürzt Menschen in Abgründe und lebt selber alterslos und unbeschadet weiter - zumindest eine Zeit lang. Dorian Gray behandelt große Themen, die uns damals wie heute beschäftigen. Es geht um den Konflikt zwischen Kunst und Moral, Disziplin und Genuss. Und um den Wunsch nach ewiger Jugend und die Vergänglichkeit der Schönheit.Oscar Wilde wurde am 16.10.1854 in Dublin geboren. Sein Vater war Arzt, seine Mutter Dichterin. Wilde studierte in Dublin und Oxford. Seit 1879 lebte er in London. 1895 wurde er vom Vater seines Freundes Lord Douglas wegen homosexueller Neigungen angezeigt und zu zwei Jahren Zuchthaus verurteilt. Wilde starb am 30.11.1900 in Paris.

Letters to the Sphinx contains five main sections: the first is a typically characterful, cantankerous and yet appreciative essay of explanation by Oscar Wilde's literary executor and close friend, Robert Ross. Then follow three major essays of reminiscence by the Sphinx herself, the book's compiler, Ada Leverson, also a dear friend of Wilde: The Importance of Being Oscar gives an iconically witty introduction to how Wilde operated and who he was; The Last First Night gives an elegiac impression of the atmosphere Wilde generated at the zenith of his career; and, finally, Afterwards is a sombrely quiet reflection on Wilde's trials and imprisonment, his troubles, as he called them. Finally it becomes Wilde's turn to speak. In thirty letters, letter-excerpts and telegrams his nature is impressed upon us. From his highest manner which surprisingly lacked stiffness, and in his lowest spirits which were plainly humble, his facility with and mastery of words and epigram are clearly evident, providing a compelling portrait of a personality which was, as Ross claims, 'unique in English literature'. This slender volume was originally published as a limited edition in 1930 and has remained unavailable, except in the rare book market, ever since.
