Three thousand to four thousand years ago, Native Americans first inhabited the the Grand Canyon. The Pueblo Indians built adobe houses around the canyon and made animal figures out of twigs. The Hopi Indians believed when they died, their spirits came to rest in the canyon. The first American to cross the Colorado River was Hamblin in 1864. And in 1869 Major John Wesley Powell traveled the Grand Canyon on the Colorado River. In 1905 the El Tovar, Hotel was built on the canyon rim. Seventy-five different species of mammal, fifty species of reptiles, twenty-five species of fish, and three hundred species of bird live in the Grand Canyon. In 1540 Francsico Coronado discovered the Grand Canyon, and congress declared Grand Canyon Preserve a National Park in 1919. The Grand Canyon is a vacation spot you will never forget. The Roman city of Pompeii was destroyed by a volcanic eruption in 79 A.D. It was first occupied in 6th century B.C, and the Romans turned it into a place to vacation in 81 B.C., and it served that purpose (among others) until it was buried, lost, and forgotten under mud and ash.Two million people now live under Mount Vesuvius, and it has erupted more than fifty times since 9 A.D.. It continued to erupt every 100 years until about 1037 A.D., when it went into hibernation for six hundred years. In 1631, Mount Vesuvius erupted yet again, taking 4000 more lives. During the restoration (after the 1631 eruption) workers discovered the ruins of ancient Pompeii! Everyone is curious about Pompeii, because the city was a wonderful, glamorous and modern place that seemed to just disappear (like the tale of Atlantis) from the face of the earth. This is your chance to see a bit of exactly what has been uncovered, as John D. Weigand's photographs and the poetry of Penelope Dyan help you explore this once great and ancient city in the pages of yet another Bellissima book meant for kids that looks great on your coffee table!
This book was written on Valentines Day and is book five in the 'Mikey And Me' book series. It incorporates the words from the dolch reading word list to add yet another very special dimension to the book. But it doesn't have to be Valentines Day for a kid to enjoy "Mikey And Me And The Valentines," and it doesn't have to be Valentines Day to remind us that we need to remind one another every single day that we love them. The message of 'who is your valentine' every day of the year is quite clear in this kid sized, friendly early reader book with the extra large sized print, created especially for little eyes that need extra help seeing so that they can enjoy reading. Kid friendly, fun and kid tested, Penelope Dyan makes her message clear. Love is everywhere! You just need to know where to look for it.Dyan is a former K-12 teacher, an attorney and an award winning author, illustrator and poet, who proves once again that Bellisssima loves kids! Just ask any child who happens to be a Penelope Dyan fan, and they will tell you the very same thing, because books are also meant for kids!
More than 400 seabirds were treated at the International Bird Rescue's(IBRRC) Northern California bird center after they were caught up in a deadly algae foam along the Pacific Northwest coast. Oregon and Washington wildlife rescue centers were overwhelmed with epidemic numbers of wet, cold, and dying sea birds soiled by an unusual sea slime. When author Penelope Dyan and photographer John D. Weigand arrived at the center in Fairfield, California that afternoon, they had no idea they would be returning to witness a massive bird rescue and would see the tools they were shown and photographed put into action.Bird's heads were covered to ease stress as the volunteers worked on them, and it was clear they would be working through the night just to initially process the birds; and then the next morning they would have to begin washing them! It was a job of massive proportions. It would take weeks, perhaps months to return these birds to their habitats. This is the third book in the Animal Rescue Series, and it is truly a book for the birds! Dyan and Weigand have created a book meant for children that is perfect for your coffee table. Once again, Bellissima publishes a book with a purpose, reminding us that before all the birds fall from the sky, we need to do something to protect our environment. and that we also need to support the many volunteers who work at rescue centers like this one, because we are all a part of creation, and man was (after all) put on this earth to have dominion over its creatures. And that means we must protect them.

The area of Juneau is larger than that of Rhode Island and Delaware individually and almost as large as these two states combined. Downtown Juneau is nestled right at the base of Mount Juneau and is named after gold prospector Joe Juneau, although the place was for a time called Rockwell; and after that it was called Harrisburg after Juneau's co-prospector, who was named Richard Harris. That said, Juneau is a great place for kids where you can go to the top of a mountain in a tram and eat lunch, shop, see a wildlife center, and on a clear day look out over the town below you. Juneau is touristy and fun, and you can buy freshly made popcorn and fudge in a family owned store.Award winning author, attorney and former teacher Penelope Dyan, and photographer John D. Spared from the devastation of the great world wars, in Regensburg, you can see what a medieval city looked like better than just about anywhere else in Central Europe, as it was the only major medieval city in Germany to remain intact during the plight of those times, thus it retains a true storybook appearance of old. Sometimes we get lonely when we travel, and we get homesick for the things of home. Maybe this has happened to you. This book written by award winning author, attorney and former teacher, Penelope Dyan, is a little bit different. Yes, it is a travel book in the sense that it shows you some of the fun things you can do and see, but it is also two other things. It's a book about getting homesick, and it is a book that repeats phrases and uses rhyme and word recognition so you can learn to read and shout out what is coming next in the rhyme. Dyan and Weigand want you to go ahead and have some fun and at the same time learn as you explore the town of Regensburg, Germany through the words of Penelope Dyan and the camera lens of John D. Weigand.
