This work is not intended to be a history of the slave trade, but rather to show that the slave trade was an important economic and cultural factor in the formative days of the U.S.
This study traces the reciprocal relationship between Africa and America from the seventeenth-century slave trade onwards. Particular attention is paid to the United States policy regarding Africa, the impact of private enterprise, the administration of foreign aid and the involvement of Africa in the Cold War.
