It has two market places, streets with remarkable architecture, gardens, and walks. Sir Nikolaus Pevsner described the Custom House at King's Lynn as 'one of the finest late circa seventeenth century public buildings in provincial England', and the walk through Nelson Street, St Margaret's Place, and Queen Street as 'one of the most satisfying Georgian promenades in England'. King's Lynn is a picturesque town which has often been used for film sets. At one time it was one of England's busiest ports.

Inside the abbey has a magnificent golden altar screen designed by Sir Ninian Comper which has been described as 'sumptuous', and 'one of the most outstanding altar screens in Europe'. In 1549 Robert Kett, a landowner here, became the leader of a rebellion which became known as 'Ketts Revolt' which is depicted on the town sign. Wymondham has a variety of buildings including the Market Cross, the Green Dragon, Chapel of St. Thomas a Becket, and the Abbey which remains a centre of Christian worship as it has been for centuries welcoming visitors to Wymondham from around the world.

While at Thaxted he wrote 'Jupiter', a part of his 'Planets Suite'. His tune 'Thaxted' was based on 'Jupiter' and he adapted it for the hymn 'I vow to thee my country'. He lived here until 1925. A blue plaque is on the front wall of what was his music room.

It has beautiful buildings, including St Edmundsbury Cathedral, which delight visitors from home and overseas. The award winning Abbey Gardens include the Rose Garden which was established by a gift of royalties from a book written by the American Sergeant John T. Appleby who served during World War II and fell in love with Suffolk. The gardens are a memorial to the men of the 94th Bombardment Group, United States Army Air Force who gave their lives during World War II. Another feature in the Abbey Gardens is the Peace Garden which has a teardrop sculpture which was unveiled on January 27th 2015 to commemorate Holocaust Memorial Day.
