Introducing a new method of reconstructing the fragmented papyrus rolls excavated from Herculaneum, this work offers a text of the philosophical part of Philodemus' De pietate, together with an English translation and commentary.

In Book 1, a major new addition to the corpus of classical literature, Philodemus summarises several previously unknown poetic theories. This is the first volume in a series of new texts and translations with commentary of the aesthetic works of Philodemus rescued from the lava of Vesuvius.

This edition collects the epigrams attributed to Epicurean philosopher and poet Philodemos of Gadara (c.110-40 BC). In addition to his life, use of meter, the epigrammatic tradition, and their place in the Greek Anthology - it considers the relationship between his philosophy and poetry.
