This book explores what socialism in Western Europe meant for the generation that came to maturity after World War I. It captures the subjective aspect of the socialist experience through interviews conducted with socialist leaders who held a significant place in the movement from the 1930s on.
The purpose of this study is to analyze France's effort to redefine its role in the post-Cold War era and in an integrated Europe, and what that redefined role might mean to France, to Europe, and to the United States.
