In der letzten Phase seines Lebens erkrankte er an Kehlkopfkrebs, woran der 1886 starb.Der Klassiker über Ramakrishna schlechthin ist "Gospel of Ramakrishna" von Mahendranath Gupta (M.), der die letzten vier Jahre des Lebens des Heiligen und seine Botschaft umfasst. Die kürzere und ältere Version, die Swami Abhedananda 1907 veröffentlicht hat, liegt hier erstmals in deutscher Übersetzung vor.
