An African proverb states that "It takes a village to raise a child." At Mrs. Butler's house, children become a part of a village. Mrs. Butler, a children's advocate, provided a safe haven for neighborhood children and taught life lessons while providing delicious snacks and fun activities. Her house served as a rallying place for children to gather and learn social skills and practical principles, for daily living.Saturdays were a highlight, for school-age children who made weekly visits to Mrs. Butler's House and engaged in story time. At Mrs. Butler's House, children learned; how to read, to enjoy reading, valuable life lessons and participated in exercises that promoted good citizenship and character principles.
