    Paul Verlaine est né à Metz, le 30 mars 1844. Il mourut à Paris le 8 janvier 1895 après avoir, dans les dernières années de sa vie, erré d'un hôpital à l'autre, en proie aux misères de l'alcool. L'Académie, de son vivant, lui avait refusé une immortalité que ce poète maudit eut bientôt conquise, une fois disparu. Paul verlaine nous a laissé quelques-uns des poèmes les plus fameux de la littérature française : Le Colloque sentimental, Il pleure dans mon cœur, Chanson d'automne, Le ciel est par-dessus le toit. Ils témoignent d'une sensibilité impondérable que, jusqu'à lui, on ne pensait pas que le langage eut pouvoir d'exprimer. Tout n'est ici que doux froissement de voyelles, rythmes à peine perceptibles, chagrin qu'un seul soupir résume. Toute éloquence et toute littérature ont bien disparu de ces vers, comme leur auteur le voulait. Mais Verlaine n'est pas qu'un musicien du verbe. Il sait nous raconter de petits événements intimes, surgis du souvenir (Never more), ou bien nous décrire, eaprès ce qui fut, ce qui n'est pas encore et ne sera sans doute jamais : un amour impossible en son exigence (Mon rêve familier) ; ou bien encore des paysages couleur d'âme, infiniment solitaires (Promenade sentimentale, Clair de lune, Dans l'interminable ennui). Verlaine sait aussi élever le ton, atteindre à une triste imprécation contre lui-même (Les Faux beaux jours). C'est aussi un tendre moraliste, un saint François sentimental (Ecoutez la chanson bien douce, Les chères mains). Et au comble du chagrin, un rien fait que le poète ne désespère (L'espoir luit). Mais faut-il s'en tenir, en ce qui le concerne, à l'image du Pauvre Lélian, ou à celle du faune grognon et pathétique qu'il devient en vieillissant ? Verlaine, le poète maudit, fut aussi un grand écrivain. Il occupe dans la littérature universelle une place qu'on n'a peut-être pas su encore lui reconnaître. " Je n'aurai pas fait de théorie ", a-t-il dit. Il a fait mieux que cela : il a extrait du pauvre langage quotidien des lumières, des harmonies, des constructions inattendues et subtiles, dont notre langue, à jamais, lui est redevable – autant que notre cœur est gros des peines qu'il chante.
