This is a revised version of M. J. Trow's classic biography of an ancient and unforgettable hero.'I am Spartacus' ranks among the most famous lines in Hollywood, with its image of the man's comrades prepared to die in his place in the Kirk Douglas film. And die they did; not the actors but the real army of Spartacus, crucified in their thousands along the Appian Way that leads to Rome.Spartacus: The Myth and the Man is a revised version of M. J. Trow's original biography, the first to be written in English, of a legend who has become all things to all men. He has been the focus of a ballet and an opera. Karl Marx called him 'the finest fellow in ancient history' and a communist group in 1920s Germany tried to topple the Weimar government in his name. The humble slave from Thrace (today's Bulgaria) became a gladiator, led a revolt and took on the greatest military system in history - Rome. The Romans were understandably anxious to erase him from history, so key facts about the man are hard to come by. What we do know is that he fought not one, but six Roman armies and beat them all before his final defeat.Thoroughly researched and impressive in its breadth, Spartacus: The Myth and the Man will please readers with an interest in ancient history.Praise for Spartacus: The Myth and the Man:'Puts the fascinating story of Spartacus and his rebellion into its historical context in great detail. I really enjoyed it' - Amazon review'If you're interested in Ancient Rome, or really enjoyed the Kirk Douglas epic, this book is fascinating. It highlights how the Spartacus story has been used and misused down the centuries and attempts to put flesh on the bones of the story' - Amazon reviewM. J. Trow is a historian, biographer and crime novelist. His books include the well-known Lestrade and Maxwell series as well as non-fiction such as Who Killed Kit Marlowe? and Vlad the Impaler. Originally from Wales, he now lives on the Isle of Wight.

  • by Nuran Nabi
    £16.99

Bullets of '71: A Freedom Fighter's Story details Dr. Nuran Nabi's experience growing up in rural Bangladesh and living through the tumultuous episodes of the Bangladesh liberation movement and the liberation war. This is the true story of how a frail young man developed into a politically conscious student activist before transforming into a heroic freedom fighter in the Bangladesh Liberation War. Throughout Dr. Nabi's narrative, the untold stories of the Bangladesh Liberation War unfold. The sacrifices and heroic actions captured through Dr. Nabi's words define more than his accomplishments, they define his entire generation. The Bangladesh Liberation War was a people's war. Men and women, young and old, students, farmers, bureaucrats, laborers, political activists, and defected Bengali soldiers of the Pakistani military, all joined the liberation war. Bullets of '71 is their story. The Bangladesh liberation war was bloody. Three million people were killed, thousands of women were raped, and ten million people were forced to become refugees. However, this story transcends the events of the war. It explores the political backdrop amongst China, the United States, the Soviet Union, and India. Dr. Nabi effectively illustrates how the selfish decisions of a few world leaders led to millions of crimes perpetrated against humanity. But among all the pages in this book, none are more candid and horrific than those that cover the atrocities committed by the Pakistani military. Although the Bangladesh genocide unfolded during the nine months of the liberation war, Dr. Nabi thoughtfully separates these stories to remind us of why he and his fellow freedom fighters fought. Bullets of '71: A Freedom Fighter's Story is the most authentic account of the events that transpired in 1971 Bangladesh. It is a captivating story that captures the elements of the universal struggle for freedom.

US Navy-A Footprint in My Life Long ago when I was young and unafraid living in Burlington, Iowa I faced a reality that shook me and took me on a path that I had not envisioned. My vision was to attend University and become an Engineer instead I faced being drafted. At the time I was a Brazilian citizen and registered with the Brazilian military but not the US. My high school years were great. I had good friends. I was in the top of the class grade wise. I lettered in football and wrestling. I was elected student council president. I participated in theater. Things seemed to be at the summit of my dreams. In my senior year I applied to many colleges and was accepted by Dartmouth, the University of Arizona, and the University of Iowa. The University of Iowa asked for my draft status. I was registered with the Brazilian military I did not have a US draft number. I was truly scared because the news was about draft dodgers that had been caught and then either sent to prison or put in the Army and sent to Vietnam. There was no one to advise me. I visited all the military recruiting offices to find out what type of programs I might qualify for. They all were interested in signing me up. The Navy promised me Electronics School, Nuclear Power School and the NESEP program that would take me through university and make me an officer in the Navy. I still had hopes on attending one of the Universities, so I went to the Draft board to learn my fate. The gentle grey haired lady behind the single desk in the draft board office listened to my story and then let me know that I was under arrest! I asked her to call the Navy recruiter. She nodded and did so. He came down with the recruiting paperwork and I left the draft board office as a Navy enlistee. I graduated from the Electronics school at the Great Lakes US Navy base. And then was on the way to Nuclear Power training school but there was a few month wait, and I was assigned temporarily to the USS Gunston Hall. It was during this wait that my great plan of avoiding Vietnam took a uncanny twist. The ship received orders to take three gun barrels for the USS Missouri to the Philippines. Once we delivered these gun barrels the Gunston Hall got orders to take three river opening Tango boats and escort them from river to river along the Vietnamese coast. We went up and down the coast of Vietnam several times. I was a fifty caliber machine gunner on the escort boat that made sure the Tango boats got into the river mouth safely. That phase ended several months later, and I did return to safely to the US and went through Nuclear power School.I ended up on the USS Coronado for a short time and then volunteered to be on the hydrofoil USS Tucumcari and went on a tour of Europe. The Tucumcari assignment was the highlight of my time in the Navy. The tour went from the North Sea to the Turkish straits between the Mediterranean and the Black Sea. The tour included visits to eleven countries. The purpose was to envision the European navies with the power hydrofoil provided. My last assignment was on the USS Wood County that had escorted the Tucumcari. It was during the decommissioning of the Wood County that I facilitated a peaceful resolution to an onboard race riot. My actions earned me the support of the Captain. He asked what I wanted. I let him know that I wanted to get out early so that I could attend University. He offered to support my going into the NESEP program, but I knew that the life in the Navy was not for me. He granted me my wish by making me the decommissioning "Captain" of the USS Wood County as it went through its final preparation to enter the moth ball fleet. I got out early and went on to become an Engineer.

Historical biographies

At tales.as you will find exciting historical biographies about, among other things, great historical personalities, which provide a completely unique insight into their then or past lives. The reader gets even closer to the main character than ever before, by gaining greater knowledge of the person's past challenges and what has often been the basis for the drastic actions and decisions that have been made. Getting closer to Captain Sir Tom Moore, for example, in "Tomorrow Will Be A Good Day", born at the tail end of the Spanish flu epidemic, Tom Moore was raised in the Yorkshire Dales by a loving family that had not escaped tragedy. Whether fighting for his life in Burma or helming a firm back home, racing motorbikes or raising a family, he always sought to do his very best. However, our selection is far larger than celebrities and their success stories, as the range also largely caters to those readers who instead want to gain an insight into more ordinary people and their upsetting stories, which can cover the challenges that many others in these times have also faced. Captivating examples of these historical biographies can be anything from "Happiest Man on Earth" by Eddie Jaku, which is a heartbreaking and inspiring story about an Auschwitz survivor who shares what he learned about gratitude, tolerance and kindness. Or the story of Anne Frank in the biography "Diary of a Young Girl", where Anne kept a diary in which she confided her innermost thoughts and feelings, movingly revealing how the eight people living under these extraordinary conditions coped with the daily threat of discovery and death , these petty misunderstandings and the unbearable strain of living like prisoners. These historical biographies are just to name a few of many, but there are far more great biographies to be found above. Find the best historical biographies at tales.as, and be inspired, identify yourself or follow the ups and downs of an admired individual from their past dramatic lives.
