Discover the remarkable life of Alexander Hamilton...Alexander Hamilton did not rise to public prominence as an austere New Englander or a gentlemanly Virginian. He was not born in the colonies at all. He was born in the West Indies, the son of a woman of French descent who had left her husband for another man. As an illegitimate child, Hamilton could not be educated in the local church school, so businessmen, impressed by his remarkable intelligence, sent him to America for his schooling. The American Revolution would interrupt his vacation but accelerate his promotion to the national stage from his service as George Washington's aide-de-camp to his position as the new nation's first Secretary of the Treasury. Hamilton understood money and knew that for the nation to thrive, it had to become financially strong, a stance which brought him into contention with other Founding Fathers who distrusted his enthusiasm for a strong central government. His extramarital affair with a married woman brought his public career to a conclusion but he continued to involve himself in political intrigue. It was his role in a contested election that brought him to a duel with Aaron Burr, the shadowy character in American history. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights is one of the world's best-known and most translated documents. When it was presented to the United Nations General Assembly in December in 1948, Eleanor Roosevelt, chair of the writing group, called it a new "Magna Carta for all mankind." The passage of time has shown Roosevelt to have been largely correct in her prediction as to the declaration's importance. No other document in the world today can claim a comparable standing in the international community.Roosevelt and French legal expert René Cassin have often been represented as the principal authors of the declaration. But in fact, it resulted from a collaborative effort involving a number of individuals in different capacities. One of the declaration's most important authors was the vice chairman of the Human Rights Commission, Peng Chun Chang (1892-1957), a Chinese diplomat and philosopher whose contribution has been the focus of growing attention in recent years. Indeed, it is Chang who deserves the credit for the universality and religious ecumenism that are now regarded as the declaration's defining features. Despite this, Chang's extraordinary contribution has been overlooked by historians.Peng Chun Chang was a modern-day Renaissance man—teacher, scholar, university chancellor, playwright, diplomat, and politician. A true cosmopolitan, he was deeply involved in the cultural exchange between East and West, and the dramatic events of his life left a profound mark on his intellectual and political work. P. C. Chang and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights is the first biography of this extraordinary actor on the world stage, who belonged to the same generation as Mao Zedong and Chiang Kai-shek. Drawing on previously unknown sources, it casts new light on Chang's multifaceted life and involvement with one of modern history's most important documents.

    - A Biography
    by Stephen Kelly
    £15.99

Gerald Boland (Gearóid Ó Beoláin) Irish militant revolutionary, politician and statesman, has until now ranked amongst the forgotten figures of modern Irish history. This book addresses this historical imbalance. Boland's life story offers readers an insight into the birth and subsequent development of the modern Ireland. From a humble working-class family, steeped in the Irish Republican tradition, Boland played an active role in the Irish Revolution and subsequently was at the forefront of political life in the nascent years of the Irish Free State, first as a Sinn Féin elected representative and thereafter within Fianna Fáil. Boland's story thus offers readers a personal insight into many of the major military and political events which helped shape modern Ireland over the duration of his lifetime (1885-1973).Importantly, this biographical study provides readers with a critical examination regarding Gerald Boland's military adventures, political maneuvers and significantly his forgotten role as one of Ireland's eminent state builders. The picture that is painted is of a patriotic adolescent emerging to become a strong-willed militant young man turned politician and later respected (and sometimes feared) government minister.

A compelling and fascinating portrait of the continuing intellectual tradition of Greek writers and thinkers in the Age of Rome.In 146 BC, Greece yielded to the military might of the Roman Republic; sixty years later, when Athens and other Greek city-states rebelled against Rome, the general Lucius Cornelius Sulla destroyed the city of Socrates and Plato, laying waste to the famous Academy where Aristotle had studied. However, the traditions of Greek cultural life would continue to flourish during the centuries of Roman rule that followed, in the lives and work of a distinguished array of philosophers, doctors, scientists, geographers, travellers and theologians.Charles Freeman's accounts of such luminaries as the physician Galen, the geographer Ptolemy and the philosopher Plotinus are interwoven with contextual 'interludes' that showcase a sequence of unjustly neglected and richly influential lives. Like the author's The Awakening, The Children of Athena is a cultural history on an epic scale: the story of a rich and vibrant tradition of Greek intellectual inquiry across a period of more than five hundred years, from the second century BC to the start of the fifth century AD.

How Robespierre's career and legacy embody the dangerous contradictions of democracyMaximilien Robespierre (1758-1794) is arguably the most controversial and contradictory figure of the French Revolution, inspiring passionate debate like no other protagonist of those dramatic and violent events. The fervor of those who defend Robespierre the "e;Incorruptible,"e; who championed the rights of the people, is met with revulsion by those who condemn him as the bloodthirsty tyrant who sent people to the guillotine. Marcel Gauchet argues that he was both, embodying the glorious achievement of liberty as well as the excesses that culminated in the Terror. In much the same way that 1789 and 1793 symbolize the two opposing faces of the French Revolution, Robespierre's contradictions were the contradictions of the revolution itself. Robespierre was its purest incarnation, neither the defender of liberty who fell victim to the corrupting influence of power nor the tyrant who betrayed the principles of the revolution. Gauchet shows how Robespierre's personal transition from opposition to governance was itself an expression of the tragedy inherent in a revolution whose own prophetic ideals were impossible to implement. This panoramic book tells the story of how the man most associated with the founding of modern French democracy was also the first tyrant of that democracy, and it offers vital lessons for all democracies about the perpetual danger of tyranny.

Until the end of the Cold War in 1990, the RAF had several major bases worldwide - largely in those areas where the service had been based during the inter-war years. In Cold War Boys Overseas contributors recall their time at these foreign destinations. With almost half of RAF personnel serving abroad in the 1960s situated throughout Germany, the book starts its focus there with tales of monitoring the Soviet threat. The stories then advance to the warmer climates of the Near East and Far East where different challenges awaited those serving there. As the period progressed RAF squadrons saw changes to their equipment with Hunters, Javelins and Canberras being replaced by a new generation of combat aircraft such as the Buccaneer, Harrier, Jaguar, Phantom and Vulcan. Innovation of missile defense and the expansion of the role of helicopters were also critical at this time. How this affected the RAF is told by the aircrew and ground crew who served then. The stories that feature in the book reveal just how serving overseas was a different way of life and the chapters illustrate the many facets of the RAF's capabilities across the globe. They also highlight a lifestyle that no longer exists in today's RAF. Buckle up and allow the Cold War Boys to take you on a thrilling adventure across the globe.

  • - An Expose
    by Sunil Sharan

Narendra Modi is the prime minister of India. He is extremely popular with the country's 1 billion Hindu majority, but not so with the 200 million strong Muslim minority. How has this happenstance occurred? MODI: AN EXPOSE explains in detail. We must thank the author for chronicling what is to my mind the most critical decade of Indian history -- AAKAR PATEL, Chair, Amnesty International India. A fascinating book that has ably compressed many eras of Indian political scene around Modi. In a simple and well reasoned flow of events brightened by use of inventive vocabulary ( such as miscegenation & a few more ) and cogent expressions of detachment in analysis ( such as 'But India's opposition must study Modi's behavior to see if they can glean anything from it in order to help them') are going to keep the spirit of readers high on both sides of a divided spectrum. The book has almost everything that a fast track professional needs on his fingertips to be well meaning in academic and social cliques. This is the book which is needed right now by every non-resident Indian, foreigners as well as resident-Indians since curiosity and tempers are running high to get to the right pic of an intriguing personality who camouflages hermit and the heist with apt dramatics. The book is a concise thesis of research starting with the basic tools of history necessary to dissect embedded crevices of ethnic divides which Indian social life has carried forward in its own casual and loving way of life but which was turned into a fodder for power by the RSS-BJP. The book has also not left out the gulf of trust between the RSS and BJP and this has been said with evidence and much authentic findings which match the Navjeevan Press Ahmedabad archives of letters exchanged by Sardar Patel, Nehru and Golwalkar. I felt that before the current political power holders lay their hands over that archival wealth, these basic facts need to surface in as many writings. Much of Modi understanding comes from fearlessly and impartially brought out archival communication between Nehru- Patel government and the emerging RSS tentacles in independent India. The author has bridged the past with current performance of Modi regime. Not a soul that touched Modi is missing from Amit Shah to Jaitley or even organizations and groups that impacted on decisions which were taken from time to time be it Adani or Ambani. However, readers may be provoked to know why Jashodaben has gone missing in the book since the author provides a cover of some higher ideals on Modi's act of irresponsibility towards a woman he married at an adult age of 18. His blatant casualness towards gender discrimination and sexual harassment in higher offices such as the Judges's chamber ie Gogoi case and many cases against men who turned saffron to escape legal action in universities and state governments (UP, MP cases of women home administrators) coupled with Gau-Shala led land grabbing while live cow export goes sky rocketing... are enigmas to his personality which is attempting to compete Nehru on a global scene! His cautious and calculated respect towards women's empowerment while surrounded by canon mouthing Smriti Irani and Nirmala Sitharaman after clouds over Pragya and Uma Bharti. He oversteps the boundaries constructed by RSS and turns increasingly mocking against bolder versions such as the Bengal's Mamata Banerjee and Mahua Moitra. I have enjoyed the book thoroughly for its readability and immensely connected and well researched information put together in a simple yet intellectually high breed expressions to serve a modern reader. Will provoke and attract everyone to read it across the world. Maybe, to reach more hands some titles can be slightly amended to not be so direct. Amita Singh(Professor rtd. • - How Irish reunification took place and what happened afterwards
    by Frank Schnittger
    £11.49

Written from the perspective of 2040, 15 years after Irish re-unification, this is a memoir by a young English journalist who ends up falling in love with an Irishwoman, Ireland, its people, and its politics. It gives a personal account of how a Border Poll was called, why it was carried, and what happened afterwards. It traces the development of a unified Irish state over a 15 year transition period and looks at how it all turned out, from a variety of points of view in Ireland and Britain. The Good Friday Agreement is silent on what happens after a border poll is carried. This book attempts to fill that gap in an informative, challenging, engaging, and amusing way. It does not assume anything is "inevitable" but rather the consequence of the good and bad actions of the various actors involved. Indeed, it is a homage to what good politics can achieve. PLEASE NOTE: This book is often listed as "unavailable" on Amazon.co.uk for prospective Irish customers, according to Amazon due to Brexit related export/import complications. It should always be available on Amazon.com, Amazon.de, Amazon.es, or another European Marketplace. Let us hope there will soon be an Amazon.ie, or even an Amazon.eu!

Historical biographies

At tales.as you will find exciting historical biographies about, among other things, great historical personalities, which provide a completely unique insight into their then or past lives. The reader gets even closer to the main character than ever before, by gaining greater knowledge of the person's past challenges and what has often been the basis for the drastic actions and decisions that have been made. Getting closer to Captain Sir Tom Moore, for example, in "Tomorrow Will Be A Good Day", born at the tail end of the Spanish flu epidemic, Tom Moore was raised in the Yorkshire Dales by a loving family that had not escaped tragedy. Whether fighting for his life in Burma or helming a firm back home, racing motorbikes or raising a family, he always sought to do his very best. However, our selection is far larger than celebrities and their success stories, as the range also largely caters to those readers who instead want to gain an insight into more ordinary people and their upsetting stories, which can cover the challenges that many others in these times have also faced. Captivating examples of these historical biographies can be anything from "Happiest Man on Earth" by Eddie Jaku, which is a heartbreaking and inspiring story about an Auschwitz survivor who shares what he learned about gratitude, tolerance and kindness. Or the story of Anne Frank in the biography "Diary of a Young Girl", where Anne kept a diary in which she confided her innermost thoughts and feelings, movingly revealing how the eight people living under these extraordinary conditions coped with the daily threat of discovery and death , these petty misunderstandings and the unbearable strain of living like prisoners. These historical biographies are just to name a few of many, but there are far more great biographies to be found above. Find the best historical biographies at tales.as, and be inspired, identify yourself or follow the ups and downs of an admired individual from their past dramatic lives.
