From foreword by Lou Holtz, former head football coach at the University of Notre Dame: "Over the course of the last 45 years, I have gradually come to view myself as basically a God-fearing and principled person, and I have tried to teach my beliefs, values and practices to my children and to any other audience or individual who was willing to listen. I only wish I had developed these same beliefs, values and practices earlier. High Ideals: Theodore Roosevelt's 1911 Western Trip, is the second in Mr. Blase's two-volume set describing, in a highly creative frst-person journal style, President Theodore Roosevelt's two extended western vacation train trips during the first part of the 20th century. Reading this second volume by Mr. Blase has allowed me to broaden the scope of my previously-held beliefs, values and practices. I would highly encourage everyone to read this book, and to read it cover-to-cover. I can guarantee you that, should you do so, you will not only grow to intimately appreciate Theodore Roosevelt's approaches to all aspects of life, but you will also learn how to become a much better person, yourself, in the process, should you choose to put into practice even some of the 'realizable ideals' the former President not only preached during the course of this five-week train trip, but actually lived. And I can also guarantee you one more thing: you'll have a lot of fun, along the journey!"

  • - From Dr. Jonathan to Gen. Buhari
    by Chief Emeka Asinugo Ksc
    £40.99

The Presidential Years: From Dr. Jonathan to Gen. Buhari captures a very sensitive period in the evolution of democracy in Nigeria. Some of the very important events which took place during the decade 2010 to 2020 which motivated Nigerians to vote for change are analytically x-rayed in the book. The challenging confrontations that faced the country in its frantic search for true democracy are also succinctly narrated in the book for those who may find interest in knowing how far Nigeria had come. In a very crucial sense, these were the years Nigeria's political leaders were accosted with the most drastic demands for democratic reforms and were able, through legislative dialogues, a level of official impunity and tribal pressure to establish what can best be defined as the fundamental tenets of democratic governance. Unarguably, Nigeria has some of the best brains in the world. Nigeria is endowed with great mineral resources which include oil and gas. But unfortunately, so many successful and unique Nigerians are literarily running away from their country to serve the interest of foreign countries because the social conditions Nigerian political leaders created does not favour them. So many educated Nigerians and even the not-so-educated ones daily leave the country in their droves in search of greener pasture abroad. Many Nigerian university graduates in America and Europe end up doing menial jobs as plate washers and security guards. But, ironically, they are happier doing such jobs than staying and working in Nigeria. One reason is because they are paid their wages at the end of the day and no one owes anyone salary arrears. In Nigeria, you get owed so many months arrears of salary that the typical Nigerian no longer needs a job - he needs money - and he goes for it. All these are challenges that Nigerian leaders must look into if the country must consolidate on the foundational gains it made during this decade. So, at the end of the day Nigerians can come home to proudly Nigeria. There will be nothing greater in the march towards true democracy than that assurance that Nigerians can rely on the great manpower and mineral resources nature endowed their country with to give it its rightful place in the comity of nations.

  • by Benjamin Franklin
    £7.99

The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin, is the memoir account of Benjamin Franklin's life in the United States of America. Benjamin Franklin's memoir is divided into four parts, reflecting the different historical periods at which he wrote them, such as the Colonial period. The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin is the traditional name for the unfinished record of Benjamin Franklin's life, however Benjamin Franklin himself appears to have called the work his Memoirs. Although his Autobiography had a tortuous publication history after Benjamin Franklin's death, it has become one of the most famous and influential examples of an autobiography ever written. The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin is often required textbook reading in various courses that encompass history, the historical United States of America, the Colonial period, and politics & government. Whether classified in the category of biographies & memoirs or classified as an autobiography, Benjamin Franklin's work has garnered widespread praise, both for its historical value as a record of an important early American and for its literary style. It is often considered the first American book to be taken seriously by Europeans as literature.

The Untold Stories of the American Forces Vietnam NetworkThe American Forces Vietnam Network (AFVN) was the military broadcast network that served American service personnel during the Vietnam War. But much of what has been previously written about the AFVN has been overstated and far from comprehensive, including the most famous work: the movie Good Morning, Vietnam. Hot Mics and TV Lights is non-fiction but reads like a barnstorming novel. Providing the perspective of thirty-seven individuals who served with AFVN over the course of the war, Hot Mics and TV Lights gives the reader a broad sense of what those serving with the network experienced.Although many of the stories are humorous, AFVN suffered significant casualties. Five broadcasters were taken prisoner, and at least one radio announcer earned a Purple Heart while on air. But typical war stories do not dominate this book. Instead, you'll hear the memories of "Bobbie the Weathergirl," Vietnam's biggest TV celebrity, and Wheel of Fortune game show host Pat Sajak when he was an AFVN deejay.Hot Mics and TV Lights is not just another book about the Vietnam War, but rather the chronicle of a storied broadcast network and its personnel who did their jobs as a costly war was being waged, often just outside their studio doors.

Discover these extraordinary queens through the court culture that recorded and shaped their often tempestuous lives: their letters, heraldic devices, books, love tokens and, of course, their portraits. This publication focuses on the material traces of the queens and the court culture that shaped their lives, extensively illustrated with their letters, heraldic devices, books, love tokens and, of course, their portraits. The book begins with an examination of the women as cultural phenomena, looking at the ways in which their lives have inspired storytellers, from Shakespeare¿s Henry VIII to the musical Six, and the role that portraiture has played in the performance of the queens¿ stories. An overview essay examines the queens¿ self-presentation through portraiture before individual chapters consider each of their relationships with the king, their social and familial networks and their patronage. • - His life and his inspiration from the Ancient Greeks

    £13.49

The purpose of this book is to highlight the enormous influence of the ancient Greek civilization and Epicurean philosophy on the great historical figure of Thomas Jefferson and, through him, on modern society as a whole. I hope you'll enjoy this journey into the thoughts and actions of Thomas Jefferson through his life and writings presented from a different aspect. Thomas Jefferson studied the ancient Greek and Greco-Roman civilization and the knowledge gained from that became the foundation for his inspiration and conduct. His excellent command of both Greek and Latin enabled him to read from the original texts; an ability that helped him discern which of the ancient writings led to the transition from the Dark Ages to the Renaissance and the Age of Enlightenment. The most important result of his study was that, by utilizing this knowledge, he shaped himself into an enlightened person with the aim of establishing a free society that would offer everyone the possibility of personal happiness. In a letter, dated October 31, 1823, to the Greek scholar, Adamantios Korais, who was credited with paving the way for Greek Independence, Jefferson wrote: Nothing is more likely to forward this object than a study of the fine models of science left by their ancestors, to whom we also are all indebted for the lights which originally led ourselves out of Gothic darkness... Jefferson delved deep into the study of antiquity by examining much of the history, poetry, architecture, and philosophy of that time. However, he clearly showed a preference for a particular philosophical school. In a letter to William Short, dated October 31, 1819, he states: "As you say of yourself, I too am an Epicurean. I consider the genuine (not the imputed) doctrines of Epicurus as containing everything rational in moral philosophy which Greece and Rome have left us".Jefferson applied his philosophy, both on an individual and collective level, throughout his entire life. He supported the idea that the individual should enjoy a lifestyle through which his mind might be as fulfilled as his body. The pleasure of reading and contemplating upon universal truths through the study of texts was to be accompanied by necessary material goods and exercise to maintain the health of the body. These were the principles through which he aimed to lead humanity on an evolutionary course of exploration to identify the fundamental elements for the creation of a civilization that would ensure the happiness of people more than any other system of his time.To these ends, he was fortunate to be born in the New World, on a continent far away from the ideological chains that held Europe captive and prevented the application of the enlightened and progressive precepts of the time. Distance afforded him to be unaffected by the rivalries between the theocratic Middle Ages and the Renaissance which, despite the important role it played in history, did not manage to transcend its own biases. Jefferson was able to see the ancient world with a clear mind and thus managed to proceed "undefiled" and without hesitation to definitive conclusions concerning the happiness of the individual and that of society in the contemporary epoch. Guardians is a new first-hand account from Air National Guardsman Julia Maki Pyrah, who describes her experiences on the streets of DC protecting the people of our nation's capital and their right to assemble, while attempting to stop the destruction of monuments and local businesses from those that were looking to cause it harm. Maki, a Navy veteran that now serves in the DC Air National Guard, shares in candid detail her view of the events from a unique perspective on the streets of D.C."The normal complement of Secret Service in and around the White House, combined with the Metropolitan Police and Park Police were not going to cut it. With contributions from other Guardsmen in her unit, she describes the reality of the challenges that were faced by putting her suburb-mom life on hold, as duty called during this unusual activation of Guardsmen from all over the country.

  • - Alexander of Dreams Across the Seven Seas
    by Manohar Dev
    £6.99

This book of mine is devoted to all those people who left their country and went abroad with new hopes, new enthusiasm, new expectations and new ambitions. Everyone remembers their homeland while living abroad. Everybody gets hurt. And it is not so easy to mix in foreign languages, foreign people, and foreign living. When one has to battle to live in one's own country, it is not so easy for anyone to fulfil dreams on foreign soil. I would like to dedicate this book to all those friends who have raised the flag of their success abroad, living outside India. The culture of India and the history of India have been illuminated. "If India is liberated, the power will go into the hands of goons and freebies. All Indian leaders will be very weak, like effigies of straw."These words were once spoken by the British Prime Minister Winston Churchill in protest against the independence of India. Today the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom of the same Winston Churchill is becoming a person of Indian origin. By making India their colony, the dominance of Indians is increasing in our country of Britishers who ruled us for 200 years. In terms of population of Indians living outside India, reverse colonization of UK is happening.During the British rule over India, 10 times the number of Britishers who lived in India is now living in England. According to the 1941 census, there were around 150,000 Englishmen living in India. But today the population of people of Indian origin in England is more than 1.6 million.

Many Americans believe Barak Obama represents a hopeful future for America. But does he also reflect the American politics of the past? This book offers the broadest and best-informed understanding on the meaning of the "Obama phenomenon" to date. Paul Street was on the ground throughout the Iowa campaign, and his stories of the rising Obama phenomenon are poignant. Yet the author's background in American political history allows him to explore the deeper meanings of Obama's remarkable political career. He looks at Obama in relation to contemporary issues of class, race, war, and empire. He considers Obama in the context of our nation's political history, with comparisons to FDR, JFK, Bill Clinton, and other leaders. Street finds that the Obama persona, crafted by campaign consultants and filtered through dominant media trends, masks the "change" candidate's adherence to long-prevailing power structures and party doctrines. He shows how American political culture has produced misperceptions by the electorate of Obama's positions and values. Obama is no magical exception to the narrow-spectrum electoral system and ideological culture that have done so much to define and limit the American political tradition. Yet the author suggests key ways in which Obama potentially advances democratic transformation. Street makes recommendations on how citizens can productively respond to and act upon Obama's influence and the broader historical and social forces that have produced his celebrity and relevance. He also lays out a real agenda for change for the new presidential administration, one that addresses the recent failures of democratic politics.

Were the fates of the Wilhelmine Empire determined, at least at times, by a court camarilla, as contemporary publicists and even statesmen who bore responsibility at the time suspected? How far did Emperor Wilhelm II's influencing by the men in his immediate environment really go? Did homoeroticism also play a central role? In his carefully researched study the author explores these questions, which are usually ignored by historians, on the basis of extensive archival sources and sometimes arrives at surprising results.
