The Sunday Times Sports Book of the YearA Times Book of the YearA Financial Times Book of the YearA Guardian Book of the YearA New Statesman Book of the Year'The heartwarming story of the collaboration and friendship between English football's oddest couple, Elton John and Graham Taylor' The Times' A wonderful, feel-good account of an ultimately English provincial story' Simon Kuper_____________________ An unforgettable British underdog story from one of our greatest narrative nonfiction writers, John Preston, and the international musical icon and bestselling author, Sir Elton John.Britain in the 1970s was beset by unrest and unemployment, as inflation soared, fuel was scarce, and hooliganism was on the rise. And for Watford FC, the outlook was even gloomier. Rundown and rat-infested, Watford were an ailing side with holes in their kit and barely enough fans to fill a stand. Of the 92 clubs in the Football League, spread across four divisions, Watford were in 92nd place.Meanwhile, Elton John was the most successful rockstar in the world. With six-inch platforms, spangled jumpsuits, and peroxide hair, he was glamorous, gay, and seemingly a world away from the semi-detached house in Pinner where he had supported Watford FC as a child. Many assumed he would move to America. Instead, he bought the football club.Watford Forever is the remarkable story of Elton John's ownership of Watford FC and its transformational journey to the top of the First Division under iconic manager Graham Taylor. Perhaps most remarkably, four of the same players who had been written off as has-beens went with them all the way from the bottom to the top. Inspiring and infectiously funny, this is a tribute to football's unlikeliest friendship as Elton John and Taylor, a straight-talking former fullback with a love of Vera Lynn, beat the odds and their personal demons to save a club and a community.Immersed in the grime and glamour of '70s Britain, Watford Forever is one of sport's great underdog stories and a love letter to the beautiful game.

Michael Keedy recently wrote an interesting and well-received essay for the Baseball History Comes Alive website about Yankee Bobby Richardson and his historic grab of the hot smash off the bat of Willie McCovey that ended the 1962 World Series. The suggestion was made to him that an ongoing series of essays counting down his choices for the top ten greatest World Series catches might also go over well. Thus was the genesis of this collection of essays now compiled into a single volume. First up in the series was the aforementioned grab by Bobby Richardson which Michael rated at number 10. Next, occupying the number nine spot, was Joe Rudi's spectacular catch in Game Two of the 1972 World Series. These were followed in rapid succession with other essays highlighting great World Series heroics by the likes of Willie Mays, Mickey Mantle, and, in more recent years, Ron Swoboda. What constitutes a great catch is subjective and everyone has his or her own opinions and biases. As a lifelong Dodger fan, Michael Keedy has his; but in compiling his list, he has tried to be as objective as possible. Whether or not everyone agrees with Michael's selections, all baseball fans will find this collection of essays to be entertaining reading. A gifted writer with a unique, engaging style, Michael Keedy's essays will hold the readers' interest from the first page to the last.

In May 2019, the IAAF held a press conference in which they addressed the issue of their self proclaimed "Female Eligibility Regulations". The press conference was meant to offer clarity to those questioning their previous statement in which they had said that "The Panel found that the DSD Regulations are discriminatory but that, on the basis of the evidence submitted by the parties, such discrimination is a necessary, reasonable and proportionate means of achieving the legitimate objective of ensuring fair competition in female athletics in certain events and protecting the "protected class" of female athletes in those event" (site reference - https: //www.iaaf.org/news). This Q&A session left many more confused than before they had begun to try and explain the blatant inability to comprehend the scope of a few athletes' behaviours.

James A. Graham, a sports writer who has won multiple awards, was granted unique access to Pelé, and he used this to write a biography that traces Pelé's remarkable rise from his modest beginnings in Brazil to his debut in an international match at the age of sixteen. Because of his extraordinary athleticism, speed of thought and execution, and astonishing ball control, he is the only player in the history of the sport to have played a role in the victory of three World Cups and to have scored more than 1,200 goals during his senior career, a record that is extremely unlikely to ever be equaled or even surpassed. He is the only player to have ever appeared in three World Cup finals.Despite the remarkable achievements of players like Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, and Neymar, as well as legends like Diego Maradona and Johan Cruyff, Pelé is still considered to be the greatest footballer of all time. This is a homage to a world-class sporting hero, a wonderful sportsman, and someone who continues to this day to be an inspiration to millions of others. It has been edited and updated to bring the story up to date completely.
When Kirkwood High School's integrated basketball team faced Raytown South's all white team in the 1972 Missouri Class L state basketball championship game there was more at stake than just a game. This is the true story of how the game drew Kirkwood's white and black players together enabling them to overcome society's mores and their disparate backgrounds to fashion a perfect 31-0 record going into the state final. In this gripping memoir, Drew Rogers, Kirkwood's All State center recounts growing up in the sixties when race riots and the Civil Rights movement dominated society and a group of athletes bonded together for the sake of the game. Rogers describes the simplicity of the game, a common thread that united this team and held it together in the face of "The Game", and its promoters who sought to politicize and commercialize events for the sake of money. His recount of those times is both humorous and sobering as he draws his readers in with childhood anecdotes, societal movements and dramatic game descriptions culminating in a state tournament showdown; city versus county, black versus white - an outcome determined by the final shot in a game described by onlookers as the greatest game in Missouri high school basketball history.Rogers' story is a candid look at change in the sixties and a moving introspective on racism and how the game contributed to change.
The Surfing/Real Life Based Drama Book of the Year. Life has its up's and down's; similar to the ocean, it has mostly calm days, but without any warning, an unexpected storm can roll in and destroy everything in its path. A Surfer's nature is to rise to the challenge and head directly into the storm to conquer its brutality. However, there comes a time when the storm pins the person underwater and has to fight for survival. Life can be symbolically compared to surfing as told in this story.Steven is not average by any means and is exceedingly passionate about all aspects of life. At a young age, he grabbed a handful of E-tickets, jumped in the front seat and sped forward as his life became a thrilling roller coaster ride that never stops. He has seen the world through many eyes. First as an entrepreneur who was instrumental in changing the course of the music industry in the early 1980's. His daring ideas paved the way for a new era of music as the original manager/co-creator of the iconic band Slayer. Years later, he became a world-renowned artist, and a champion in fiberglass warfare.Steven is interviewed for a film documentary about his historic involvement in the music industry. He is asked, "If you can attribute one thing that makes you who you are and what has led you into achieving things that most could not even dream about or are too scared to attempt, what would it be?" Unexpectedly, he replies, "Surfing."When the economy crashes in 2010, he, like so many others, quickly loses everything that he worked all his life to obtain, and rapidly loses many people he loves. His life goes into a downward spiral headed toward the pit of hell where there is no return. Nearing the point of giving up, Steven reaches deep into his soul in an attempt to reclaim what it was about his youth that made him into the man he became before life broke him into pieces. Steven remembers his answer during the film interview and sits down at a computer to write his beginnings with the hope of finding himself again before it's too late.Fast paced and masterfully written with two storylines running parallel to each other. The Storm is in the present (by Desiree Clemence) as Steven's life crumbles out of control, and the other, A Surfer's Tale, from the past, a classic surf story of youth, friendship, and love (by Steven Craig), both racing against time to meet for a climatic ending.Real life stories from Surfers have mass appeal to the public whether they have set foot in the ocean or not. People don't need a connection or an interest in the sport of Surfing to get emotionally invested in this story of fighting for survival. Soul Surfer by Bethany Hamilton was the first in the set. Then came Making Mavericks (Chasing Mavericks) by Frosty Hesson - both of which are best-selling books made into major motion pictures. Next in the lineup is Riding the Storm."A fun read that rides waves of emotion. Truly inspirational." - Amber Thorn"What an enthralling adventure. Although I'm not a surfer or entrepreneur, the struggles in this novel tug at heartstrings I didn't even know I had. The drive and motivation found in every page seeps into my hands and begs me to get my own life started. Amazing, inspirational read." - Eliseo Velasquez
