Han voksede op i et borgerligt hjem på Frederiksberg, men rejste efter studentereksamen til Argentina, hvor han opholdt sig i første halvdel af 1920‘erne. Derefter vendte han hjem til Danmark for at studere engelsk og idræt. Jerndorff-Jessen begyndte at skrive ungdomsjournalistisk i slutningen af 1920‘erne og udgav sine første romaner på Drengebladets Forlag i begyndelsen af 1930‘erne. Han skrev primært bøger med raske, eventyrlystne drenge i hovedrollen, men sent i livet udgav han også en biografi om den franske digter Cyrano de Bergerac, som han havde arbejdet på gennem mange år.
