Books in the Early Sources in Reference series

This resource includes details of more than 200,000 books, pamphlets and periodicals published from 1450 to the early-19th century. All subjects, authors and titles are fully cross-referenced within an encyclopedic index.

Originally sponsored by the editor William Smellie, the engraver Andrew Bell, and Colin Macfarquahar the printer, this work was inspired by the success of Diderot's "Encyclopedie". Unlike rival publications it was published in quarto rather than the usual octavo or folio format.

Ure's Dictionary is packed with thousands of useful technical and statistical information relating to industrial development in the nineteenth century.
