Cinematic Shakespeare takes the reader inside the making of a number of significant adaptations to illustrate how cinema transforms and re-imagines the dramatic form and style central to Shakespeare's imagination.

A look at the many sources, literary and otherwise, that influence film adaptations. This work subverts the idea that film adaptations of novels and plays must be faithful to the original texts.

Through close readings of films by US filmmakers such as Quentin Tarantino, David Lynch, Errol Morris, and, Joel and Ethan Coen, this work studies provocative, disorienting strategies of genre mixing in contemporary cinema. It also explores foreign parallels to US hybrid cinema in films by such directors as Pedro Almodovar and Stephen Chow.
