Der Band befasst sich mit der Frage, wie Lehnwörter sich zu Wörtern der eigenen Sprache entwickeln und durch welche lautlichen Prozesse sie sich so verändern, dass sie nicht mehr als fremd wahrgenommen werden. Der Sprachkontakt, der während des gesamten Mittelalters zwischen dem Arabischen und den iberoromanischen Sprachen bestand, ist besonders aufschlussreich, denn er hat eine Fülle von Lehnwörtern in einer ganzen Gruppe eng verwandter Sprachen hervorgebracht. Die Studie deckt die typologischen Unterschiede zwischen der Geber- und den Nehmersprachen auf und analysiert anhand zahlreicher Beispiele, auf welche Weise segmentale und strukturelle Merkmale in Lehnwörtern angepasst werden. Die Autorin arbeitet dabei sowohl sprachspezifische Auslöser als auch universelle Tendenzen heraus, die auch auf andere Sprachkontakte übertragbar sind.
Welche Rolle spielt die Gruppensprache bei der kollektiven Identitatskonstruktion in der Migration? Am Beispiel der Wolgadeutschen in Argentinien, die nach uber 250 Jahren seit der ersten Auswanderung die ursprungliche Sprache und Kultur aufrecht erhalten haben, wird dieser Frage nachgegangen.
