Disputation literature is a type of text in which usually two non-human entities (such as trees, animals, drinks, or seasons) try to establish their superiority over each other by means of a series of speeches written in an elaborate, flowery register. As opposed to other dialogue literature, in disputation texts there is no serious matter at stake only the preeminence of one of the litigants over its rival. These light-hearted texts are known in virtually every culture that flourished in the Middle East from Antiquity to the present day, and they constitute one of the most enduring genres in world literature. The present volume collects over twenty contributions on disputation literature by a diverse group of world-renowned scholars. From ancient Sumer to modern-day Bahrain, from Egyptian to Neo-Aramaic, including Latin, French, Middle English, Armenian, Chinese and Japanese, the chapters of this book study the multiple avatars of this venerable text type.

The overarching goal of this volume is to explore a number of recent developments in Phase Theory (both theoretical and empirical), thus contributing to our overall understanding of the concept of phases.The volume is divided into three parts, of which the first focuses on the traditional role played by phases in defining successive cyclicity, while at the same time examining the interaction between that traditional role and Chomsky (2013)¿s proposal about labeling. The second part focuses on the question of whether only the highest projection of the clausal and nominal domain, CP and DP, are phases or whether those domains also contain an internal phase: vP and NP/NumP/QP, while the third part contains two chapters that focus on the extent to which ellipsis can be used as a reliable diagnostic for phasehood.As a whole, the volume provides a detailed and in-depth view on a number of recent developments in Phase Theory, which will likely continue to dominate the debate for several years to come.

This book is a comprehensive and authoritative description of the Greater Awyu family of Papuan languages. The book brings together many decades of research on Greater Awyu languages, including 10 years of field work by the author. The book presents a description of major patterns found in languages of the family: phonology, morphology, syntax and discourse. In addition, major aspects of the anthropological linguistics of Greater Awyu languages are described: counting systems, language names, kinship, linguistic ideologies, lexical substitution registers, avoidance and taboo. The linguistic patterns of Greater Awyu languages are systematically placed in the genetic, typological, areal and historical contexts of New Guinea. The long dialect continuums within the family, by reflecting different diachronic stages, offer a window on the origin of switch reference, clause chaining, topic markers, postpositions and double-headed relative clauses. The book is relevant for readers interested in the typological, historical and cultural linguistics of New Guinea but also for anthropologists and historians because the history and cultural practices of Greater Awyu speakers are a key part of the story of this language family.

Die Psychomachia des Prudentius stellt das erste vollkommen allegorische Epos des Abendlandes dar. Es ist insbesondere in der Kunst und Literatur des Mittelalters vielfältig rezipiert worden. Magnus Frisch legt nun erstmals einen Gesamtkommentar zu diesem Werk aus der Spätantike vor, der lange ein Desiderat der Forschung war. Er berücksichtigt die Erkenntnisse der philologischen, theologischen und mediävistischen Forschung der letzten Jahrzehnte.

Proteins are an important nutrient and ingredient in food as well as in nutritional supplements. The application and take up of food proteins, especially plant proteins, has been limited due to their undesirable sensory properties, e.g. taste, odour, and chalky mouth feel. This will need to change if the availability of meat protein becomes scarcer. Documenting the latest research, this book is the first overview of the recent advances in flavour research of food proteins, with an emphasis on the major plant proteins, e.g. soy and pulse proteins. The topics to be covered include sensory and instrumental characterization of flavour compounds in food proteins, how flavour profiles in food proteins can be formed or altered, research advances of individual food proteins, the use of food protein products as flavouring ingredients, and future trends of flavouring food proteins. There is a growing interest in using plant proteins in food formulation and industrial applications, but no book has yet covered this systematically until now. Summarizing research advances in consumer studies and flavour chemistry that focus on food proteins, the book will discuss the flavour properties and problems in each major and novel food protein source for the academic and industry market.

The Monastery of Pantokrator, founded by John II Komnenos and his wife Piroska-Irene, is not only one of the most important and most impressive monastic complexes of the Komnenian age, it is also one of the few to occupy a key position in the life of Constantinople in the Palaiologan age, given that its mortuary chapel (Heroon) was also the last resting place of many members of the latter dynasty. The first attempt to chronicle its history, based on the texts known at the time, was undertaken by G. Moravscik (1932). Interest was rekindled by P. Gautier¿s critical edition of its Typikon (1971), and more recently by restoration work on its buildings. This volume brings together a comprehensive selection of all the texts concerning or connected with the Monastery of Pantokrator, and through them it demonstrates the Monastery¿s importance and its role throughout the history of the Byzantine Empire¿a role that has received insufficient attention, given that older studies have tended to focus on the 12th century. The texts cover the situation in Constantinople before the Monastery was founded, the historical and cultural context within which it was established, its Typikon (monastic formulary), the descriptions of Slav and Western travellers, the Byzantine texts (homiletic, historical, hagiographic, and poetic) relating to the Monastery and its history from the 12th to the 15th century, the Byzantine officials associated with it, and the celebration of the principal festivals in its churches. It also contains critical editions of and commentaries on the two versions of the Synaxarion of Irene Komnene, a speech referring to the Empress¿s associate in the construction of the Monastery, another on the translation of the icon of St. Demetrios from the Church of St. Demetrios in Thessalonica to the Monastery of Pantokrator, an Office of the Translation of the Holy Stone, the verse Synaxarion composed for the consecration of the Monastery, and the known and unpublished poems by Byzantine poets (12th-15th c.) relating to it, as well as an extensive bibliography.

Sie verdeutlichen, wie Erwartungen und die Schlussfolgerungen daraus kollektiv verhandelt wurden. Erwartungsmanagement zielte darauf ab, Enttäuschung zu vermeiden oder ihre Folgen zu minimieren. Dies gelang nicht immer. Doch Enttäuschung bedeutete niemals das ¿Ende der Geschichte". Die Beiträge illustrieren vielmehr, welche Wege Personen und Gruppen fanden, um Enttäuschung zu überwinden.

Wörter gelten als Zeichen für Dinge und Sachverhalte in unserer Welt. Verändern sich diese, so verändern sich auch ihre Stellvertreter ¿ die Wörter. Sie werden zu ¿Zeichen der Veränderung¿. Wie diese Veränderungen erfasst werden können, wird in diesem Band an mehreren Beispielen aufgezeigt: Aus dem Bereich der Wort- und Begriffsgeschichte werden die Lexeme Geschmack und fjale (alban. ,Wort¿), der Begriff Mitteleuropa und eine Wortgeschichte des Samstags betrachtet. Bei der Kodifikation historischer Wortschätze stehen die Fremdwortlexikographie und -glossare des 17. Jahrhunderts sowie die Erforschung des Valenzwandels und grammatikographische Betrachtungen zu Verbpartikeln im Mittelpunkt. Entwicklungen im Bereich der Terminologie oder Tendenzen zur Überlänge in der juristischen Sprache finden sich in einem Abschnitt zu Fachwortschätzen und zu politischer Sprache ebenso wie die Analyse von Rassenkonzepten in der völkischen Bewegung oder jüdische Reaktionen auf die antisemitische Propaganda in Deutschland. Formulierungstraditionen und pragmatische Phänomene beschließen diesen Band, so der Gebrauch von Vor- und Nachnamen, Worte und Formeln (west-)europäischer Epistolographie, Dialektales und die gegenwartssprachliche Perspektive auf Authentizität.

Die Untersuchung widmet sich dem Phanomen des Schreibens, genauer desliterarischen und wissenschaftlichen Schreibprozesses, und zwar an der Schnittstelle zwischen Literaturwissenschaft, empirischerSchreibforschung, Kognitionswissenschaften und Wissenschaftsgeschichte.Sie analysiert eine Vielzahl bislang unbekannter Manuskripte und Quellen kanonischer Autoren des achtzehnten Jahrhunderts.

Das französische Chanson ist ein intermediales Genre von nationaler und internationaler Tragweite. Im Zuge der Medienrevolutionen des 20. und 21. Jahrhunderts erfährt die französische Chanson-Kultur eine gattungsgeschichtlich relevante Weiterentwicklung. Damit ist auch eine verstärkte nationale Markierung des nun international erfolgreichen Genres verbunden. Die vorliegende Studie liefert erstmalig eine umfassende kulturwissenschaftliche Untersuchung des ¿französischen Chansons¿. Anhand eines mythentheoretischen Ansatzes wird die mediale Mehrdimensionalität des Chansons tiefergehend erforscht und die komplexe Vernetzungsstruktur des Genres dargelegt. Auf Grundlage einschlägiger Theorien zu modernen Mythen (H. Blumenberg, C. Lévi-Strauss, R. Barthes) zeigt die Autorin, dass das moderne französische Chanson eine ¿mythische Qualität¿ aufweist. Dies geschieht in einer philologischen Analyse von über 100 Chansons der letzten 150 Jahre und in einer Untersuchung repräsentativer Chanson-Ikonen. Inwiefern die ¿mythische Qualität¿ auch diskursiv erzeugt wird, macht schließlich die Beschäftigung mit der populärwissenschaftlichen Literatur zum Chanson deutlich.

Die Studie widmet sich erstmals epochenübergreifend der jüdischen Beteiligung in der italienischen Frauenbewegung. Aus einer transnationalen Perspektive und auf der Basis neu erschlossener Egodokumente, zeitgenössischer Zeitschriften, den Archiven jüdischer Gemeinden sowie der Überlieferung von Polizei und Behörden richtet Ruth Nattermann den Fokus auf die Erfahrungen italienisch-jüdischer Protagonistinnen im liberalen Einheitsstaat, während des Ersten Weltkriegs und der faschistischen Diktatur bis 1945. Das Ziel besteht darin, die Spannungen des Emanzipationsprozesses zwischen Partizipation und Abgrenzung herauszuarbeiten sowie die Marginalisierung und Verfolgung während des faschistischen Regimes aus dem Blickwinkel jüdischer Frauen zu betrachten. Dass die faschistische Rassengesetzgebung des Jahres 1938 nicht das Ende einer idyllischen Integration, sondern den Höhepunkt einer langfristigen Entwicklung bildete, wird anhand der Untersuchung italienisch-jüdischer Akteurinnen in ihren Beziehungen zur nicht-jüdischen Mehrheitsgesellschaft eindrücklich demonstriert. Trotz ihres bedeutenden Einflusses auf die transnationale Orientierung der italienischen Frauenbewegung blieb ihre Emanzipation als Frauen und Jüdinnen unvollkommen.

Der Umgang mit Wissen und Informationen durch das Urheberrecht ist seit etwa 30 Jahren in eine Akzeptanzkrise geraten. Die politischen Regulierungsinstanzen verteidigen weiterhin die Fundamente des Urheberrechts und die exklusiven Schutzansprüche der individuellen Urheber, obwohl diese nicht mehr der Realität entsprechen. Nicht zuletzt aus der Wissenschaft selbst entwickelt sich der Widerstand gegen die fortschreitende Kommodifizierung des überwiegend mit öffentlichen Mitteln produzierten Wissens. Das Buch geht den Fragen nach, ob Finanzierungsmodelle, die Nutzungsfreiheit in die kommerzielle Verwertungs- und Publikationswirtschaft integrieren, nachhaltig sind und ob sich nicht in Zusammenarbeit von Wissenschaftlern, Förder- und Vermittlungsorganisationen wie Bibliotheken, aber auch von Verlagen neue offene Informationsprodukte und -dienstleistungen entwickeln können. Der Autor schlägt das Konzept der ¿Nutzungsrechte und Nutzungsfreiheit für Wissen und Information¿ vor, das an Stelle des individualistischen Urheberrechts treten soll.

Das lukanische Doppelwerk ist kein einheitliches Buch, sondern ein vieldiskutiertes Problem. Die Studie verfolgt die lebhafte Diskursgeschichte vom 18. Jahrhundert bis in die aktuellen Debatten. Founded in 1919 under the Treaty of Versailles as part of the League of Nations¿ system, the ILO is still today the main organization responsible for the international organization of work and the improvement of working conditions in the world. Widely recognized for its efforts in building international labour standards, the ILO remains little studied by development specialists and historians. This book intends to fill this gap and traces the history of international development and its early pioneers, through an analysis of the activities of the International Labour Office, the Secretariat of the International Labour Organization, between 1930 and 1946. In this book, development is used as a key to questioning the ILO's place and function in the expanding inter-war world. The development practices and discourses that emerged in the 1930s were mainly intended to support the ILO's universalization strategy, which was made necessary by the events that shook Europe at the time. Development discourses and practices were also part of the "esprit du temps", as they were closely linked to the affirmation of the planist and rationalist ideas of the 1930s. However, development for the ILO was not reduced to a project of economic modernization, but was seen as a tool for social engineering, as evidenced by the ILO's missions of technical assistance, organized since 1930. The analysis of the expertise work makes it possible to highlight the logics that prevailed in technical assistance, which was more in line with institutional objectives, than with the dissemination of a genuine expertise. This book therefore hopes to bring new insight on the history of internationalism, and international organizations during the inter-war period and the Second World War, as well as on the role of the ILO in the history of international development thinking and practices.

The book analyzes the place of religious difference in late modernity through a study of the role played by Jews and Muslims in the construction of contemporary Spanish national identity. The focus is on the transition from an exclusive, homogeneous sense of collective Self toward a more pluralistic, open and tolerant one in an European context. This process is approached from different dimensions. At the national level, it follows the changes in nationalist historiography, the education system and the public debates on national identity. At the international level, it tackles the problem from the perspective of Spanish foreign policy towards Israel and the Arab-Muslim states in a changing global context. From the social-communicational point of view, the emphasis is on the construction of the Self-Other dichotomy (with Jewish and Muslim others) as reflected in the three leading Spanish newspapers.
