EsTAL - Espana ~ for Natural Language Processing - continued on from the three previous conferences: FracTAL, held at the Universit¿ e de Franch-Comt¿ e, Besan¿ con (France) in December 1997, VexTAL, held at Venice International University, Ca ¿ Foscari (Italy), in November 1999, and PorTAL, held at the U- versidade do Algarve, Faro (Portugal), in June 2002. The main goals of these conferences have been: (i) to bring together the international NLP community; (ii) to strengthen the position of local NLP research in the international NLP community; and (iii) to provide a forum for discussion of new research and - plications. EsTAL contributed to achieving these goals and increasing the already high international standing of these conferences, largely due to its Program Comm- tee,composedofrenownedresearchersinthe?eldofnaturallanguageprocessing and its applications. This clearly contributed to the signi?cant number of papers submitted (72) by researchers from (18) di?erent countries. Thisvolumecontainspapersselectedforpresentationatthe2004AnnualConf- enceoftheEuropeanAssociationforComputerScienceLogic,heldonSeptember 20-24, 2004 in Karpacz, Poland. The CSL conference series started as the International Workshops on C- puterScienceLogic,andthen,after?vemeetings,becametheAnnualConference of the European Association for Computer Science Logic. This conference was the 18th meeting, and the 13th EACSL conference. Altogether 99 abstracts were submitted, followed by 88 papers. Each of these paperswasrefereedbyatleastthreereviewers.Then,afteratwo-weekelectronic discussion, the Programme Committee selected 33 papers for presentation at the conference. Apart from the contributed papers, the Committee invited lectures from Albert Atserias, Martin Hyland, Dale Miller, Ken McMillan and Pawel Urzyczyn. Its goals were to cover the whole range from the theory to applications of agent and multiagent technology and re?ect the national and international state of the art. The conference p- vided an excellent interdisciplinary forum for both researchers and members of business and industry to present and discuss the latest advances in theoretical work on and prototyped or ?elded systems of intelligent agents. Building on the sequence of agent-related events in Germany in the past, such as VDI 1998 (Chemnitz), VertIS 2001 (Bamberg), and KI 2002 (Aachen), MATES 2003 was exclusively devoted to agents and multiagent systems, and the cro- fertilization between agent theory and application. In addition, it built on the success of the past international workshop on "Agent Technology and Software Engineering (AgeS 2002)", and the international symposium on "Multiagent Systems,LargeComplexSystems,andE-Businesses"(MALCEB2002).MATES 2003 was co-located with the fourth international Net.ObjectDays conference in an exciting event held in Erfurt during September 22-24. The MATES 2003 conference featured a sequence of regular and invited talks of excellence given by leading experts in the ?eld. Among these were two k- notes, an invited talk and 18 paper presentations selected from 49 submissions.
