The main subjects of the Developments in Language Theory (DLT) conf- ence series are formal languages, automata, conventional and unconventional computation theory, and applications of automata and language theory. T- ical, but not exclusive, topics of interest include: grammars and acceptors for strings, graphs, and arrays; e?cient text algorithms; combinatorial and al- braic properties of languages; decision problems; relations to complexity theory andlogic;picturedescriptionandanalysis;cryptography;concurrency;andDNA and quantum computing. The members of the steering committee of DLT are: J. Berstel (Paris), M. Ito(Kyoto),W. Kuich(Vienna),G. P? aun(BucharestandSeville),A. Restivo (Palermo), G. Rozenberg (chair, Leiden), A. Salomaa (Turku) and W. Thomas (Aachen). The ?rst DLT conference was organized by G. Rozenberg and A. Salomaa in Turku in 1993. After this, the DLT conferences were held in every odd year: Magdeburg(1995),Thessaloniki(1997),Aachen(1999)andVienna(2001). Since 2001, a DLT conference has been organized in every odd year in Europe and in every even year outside Europe. The last two DLT conferences were organized in Kyoto, Japan in 2002 and Szeged, Hungary in 2003. The titles of the volumes of the past DLT conferences are the following: 1. Developments in Language Theory. At the Crossroads of Mathematics, C- puter Science and Biology (edited by G. Rozenberg and A. Salomaa) (1994) (World Scienti?c) 2. Developments in Language Theory II. - 4th International Conference, EsTAL 2004, Alicante, Spain, October 20-22, 2004. Proceedings

    £74.49

EsTAL - Espana ~ for Natural Language Processing - continued on from the three previous conferences: FracTAL, held at the Universit¿ e de Franch-Comt¿ e, Besan¿ con (France) in December 1997, VexTAL, held at Venice International University, Ca ¿ Foscari (Italy), in November 1999, and PorTAL, held at the U- versidade do Algarve, Faro (Portugal), in June 2002. The main goals of these conferences have been: (i) to bring together the international NLP community; (ii) to strengthen the position of local NLP research in the international NLP community; and (iii) to provide a forum for discussion of new research and - plications. EsTAL contributed to achieving these goals and increasing the already high international standing of these conferences, largely due to its Program Comm- tee, composedofrenownedresearchersinthe?eldofnaturallanguageprocessing and its applications. This clearly contributed to the signi?cant number of papers submitted (72) by researchers from (18) di?erent countries. The scope of the conference was structured around the following main topics: (i)computational linguistics research (spoken and written language analysis and generation; pragmatics, discourse, semantics, syntax and morphology; lexical - sources; word sense disambiguation; linguistic, mathematical, and psychological models of language; knowledge acquisition and representation; corpus-based and statistical language modelling; machine translation and translation aids; com- tationallexicography),and(ii)monolingualandmultilingualintelligentlanguage processing and applications (information retrieval, extraction and question - swering; automatic summarization; document categorization; natural language interfaces; dialogue systems and evaluation of systems).

    - First German Conference, MATES 2003, Erfurt, Germany, September 22-25, 2003, Proceedings

    £38.49

ThesearetheproceedingsoftheGermanconferenceonMultiagentSystemTe- nologies(MATES2003),whichwasthe?rstconferenceorganizedbytheGerman specialinterestgrouponDistributedArti?cialIntelligencetopromotethetheory and application of agents and multiagent systems. Its goals were to cover the whole range from the theory to applications of agent and multiagent technology and re?ect the national and international state of the art. The conference p- vided an excellent interdisciplinary forum for both researchers and members of business and industry to present and discuss the latest advances in theoretical work on and prototyped or ?elded systems of intelligent agents. Building on the sequence of agent-related events in Germany in the past, such as VDI 1998 (Chemnitz), VertIS 2001 (Bamberg), and KI 2002 (Aachen), MATES 2003 was exclusively devoted to agents and multiagent systems, and the cro- fertilization between agent theory and application. In addition, it built on the success of the past international workshop on "Agent Technology and Software Engineering (AgeS 2002)", and the international symposium on "Multiagent Systems,LargeComplexSystems,andE-Businesses"(MALCEB2002).MATES 2003 was co-located with the fourth international Net.ObjectDays conference in an exciting event held in Erfurt during September 22-24. The MATES 2003 conference featured a sequence of regular and invited talks of excellence given by leading experts in the ?eld. Among these were two k- notes, an invited talk and 18 paper presentations selected from 49 submissions.
