Books in the Physics of Solids and Liquids series

The first, second, and third editions of this book seem to occur at ten year intervals. Journals only publish new results, conferences only invite speakers to report new phenomena, and agencies only fund scientists to do new physics. New sections have been added, while old sections have been modified to include recent applications.

The theory of the inhomogeneous electron gas had its origin in the Thomas Fermi statistical theory, which is discussed in the first chapter of this book. The extension of the Hartree theory by Fock, to include exchange, had its parallel in the density description when Dirac showed how to incorporate exchange in the Thomas-Fermi theory.
