In der Literatur wird Barbara seit mehreren Jahrhunderten systematisch geschmäht. Die ersten Werke, die ein negatives Bild über sie verbreiteten, entstanden schon in der Zeit ihres Todes oder sogar noch während ihres Lebens, und sie ging als Schwarze Königin oder Deutsche Messalina ins historische Bewusstsein ein. Die Autorin hat auf überraschende Weise den Ursprung der negativen Legende über Barbara von Cilli sowie ihre Urheber entdeckt. Auf Grund einer detaillierten Analyse der bis jetzt unbekannten historischen Quellen verfolgt sie die Art und Weise, wie sich das negative Bild in der damaligen Literatur und später auch im historischen Schrifttum verbreitete. Die Autorin arbeitete mit bisher nicht veröffentlichten Quellen, was ihr ermöglichte, viele Fehler und Ungenauigkeiten, die seit Jahren in der Fachliteratur im Zusammenhang mit der Königin Barbara erscheinen, zu korrigieren. Das Ergebnis bietet nicht nur Einblick in die Lebensgeschichte der Barbara von Cilli, sondern auch in die gesellschaftliche Stellung einer mittelalterlichen Königin im Allgemeinen.
