Books in the Texte und Kommentare series

The major part of this text is devoted to a detailed commentary on the ode with special attention given to language, metre, literary conventions and historical background.

The commentary is preceded by a lengthy introduction addressing the Hymn's ideas on poetry and music, its humorous aspects, the poem's relation to the rest of archaic hexameter literature, its reception in later literature, its structure, date and place of composition, and the question of its transmission.

The series publishes important new editions of and commentaries on texts from Greco-Roman antiquity, especially annotated editions of texts surviving only in fragments. Due to its programmatically wide range the series provides an essential basis for the study of ancient literature.

The anonymous Latin Story of Apollonius, King of Tyre (Historia Apollonii regis Tyri) is a romance of adventure, possibly of Greek origins, with Christian elements in its plot.

This volume presents a commented collection of the fragments and testimonies of Euripedes's play, and provides a basis for approaching the lost "Philoctes".

Die letzte erhaltene Staatsrede des Demosthenes aus dem Jahr 341 v. The "Carmina XII sapientum" is a corpus of inscriptions from late classical antiquity. This study provides a commentary on the individual elements of the corpus, dealing with all its textual, linguistic, stylistic and content-related aspects.

The Homeric Questions of the philosopher Porphyry (3rd cent. Porphyry applies the dictum that "the poet explains himself" to solve questions of interpretation in Homer. This new edition of the Questions on the Iliad eliminates much that was wrongly attributed to Porphyry in the old edition (1880).
