Fue exitoso desde el comienzo gracias a su fino espíritu crítico, ardiente imaginación y aguda sensibilidad, y sus textos están determinados por la ironía y por la estética por el arte, la crítica a la alta sociedad y la superficialidad que la envolvía, despreciando la moral burguesa y busca provocar al lector mediante el humor y la ironía. A pesar de gozar de un éxito admirable, los sectores conservadores siempre lo criticaron, y se acentuó cuando fue acusado y condenado a dos años de prisión por su homosexualidad, lo que originó el declive de su carrera literaria y de su vida personal. Cuando quedó en libertad se marchó a París, donde murió en noviembre de 1900, pobre y olvidado del gran público.

I suoi scritti si discostano dalla letteratura per bambini dell'epoca in quanto trattavano dei valori morali e furono apprezzati da adulti e bambini. Collodi non perse mai il suo tono satirico, queste storie quindi possono essere lette come allegorie. Nella versione originale di Pinocchio, il burattino di legno è impiccato per le sue azioni.

Nel 1905, coinvolto nei moti rivoluzionari, viene arrestato. È in questo periodo di vicinanza agli ambienti rivoluzionari che i suoi scritti assumono un risvolto sociale, inziando la corrente del "realismo socialista".
