From Amazon bestselling author Craig Briggs, The Journey continues with book ten in the series, THE ACCIDENTAL EXPLORER. Craig and Melanie enjoy the best of both worlds: spring, summer, and autumn in beautiful Galicia and winter on the Costa del Sol. During their time in AndalucÃa, they revisit some old haunts and explore new ones. He falls in love with the magic of Málaga and the charm of Estepona's old town, but questions Ronda's links to literary greats. On their return to Galicia, work in the vineyards requires his attention. Their passion for food and love of wine flow through Craig's narrative like a meandering waterway. Accompanying these irresistible flavours is an eclectic mix of music from Galician bagpipes to Portuguese fado and Spanish rock icons of the 1990s. Bumps in the road keep their feet on the ground, and a lapse in concentration results in an unwanted bill. When a slapdash landlord raises their concerns of a potential property scam, they hold their nerve, but nothing prepares them for Nature's assault on their precious grapes. Craig's flowing writing takes us on an unforgettable journey through Galicia and beyond. His keen observations and comedic prose breathe new life into history and introduces us to the characters preserving this rich culture for future generations.
This part-travelogue and part-scrapbook of curiosities and memories is the sequel to macabre story-teller and children´s fantasy author Rabbit Warren´s autobiographic "My Dreams and Travels". Beginning with his amusingly botched attempt to become a travel courier, Rabbit then describes how he finally realized his "Alpine Dream" by training as both a chef and a pastry chef in the Bavarian Alps, as well as then becoming a hotel children´s entertainer and magic clown in the Austrian Tyrol. As well as describing the many colorful places that he worked - including a partying ski-school, a hotel run by "witches" and a Gingerbread Kiddies´ Club - and lively characters he worked with, Rabbit also tells of his father´s visits to the Alps following his mother´s tragic death, how he had to re-invent his life after a brain tumor operation and how he finally became an Austrian citizen after Brexit. Rabbit also writes of his favorite pet-themes and inspirations, including the Von Trapp Family Singers of "The Sound of Music" fame, the Nazi Olympics of 1936 and the "Alpine Fortress" of 1945. Written in a breezy and highly readable style, this is a mostly light-hearted celebration of life that can easily inspire one to live out one´s life according to one´s dreams. Suitable for all grown-ups and teens from 14 years.
This light-hearted autobiography of macabre story-teller and children´s fantasy author, Rabbit Warren is also part-travelogue and part-scrapbook of curiosities, as well as being the prequel to "My Dreams in the Alps". Beginning with his earliest childhood memories of Apartheid South Africa before growing up in the suburbs of London, Rabbit describes how he gradually came to dream of becoming a writer, working with children and living in the Alps. After missing his final exams because of a major bicycle accident, he then recounts his travels and adventures in the Alps whilst finding work in Switzerland and, later, also in the mountains of Scotland and England. Whilst describing the many teachers who inspired him as well as the colorful characters he worked for or with - including Tomahawk, Herr Gruezi and globetrotting Toby - Rabbit also adds all sorts of fascinating background information to his travels and dreams, including the Zulus, Walt Disney, Charles Dickens, the Dream King of Bavaria, James Bond, the Pioneers of Tourism and British royal history. Written in a breezy and highly readable style, this is a playful autobiography of fun memories that may well inspire young people to get on the very next international train with a one-way ticket to Paradise. One of the Suez Canal Company's tugs soon took us down the canal from Ismailia to El Kantara (the bridge), where we were to meet our caravan. Just as we were landing we observed the first few horses of the latter crossing by the ferry which plies between the two sides of the canal. The boat had to go over three times to get all our animals and luggage, and we found it no easy work on the other side to strap up all our things ready for the journey. Matters seldom go altogether smoothly on the first day of a caravan expedition. At length a start was made, the mules laden with our tents and luggage going on in front, and ourselves bringing up the rear. The little hotel of El Kantara, with the few patches of vegetation surrounding it, was the last sight we had of civilised life. Following the telegraph posts, which mark the route from Egypt to Syria, we then entered the rolling desert, and soon began to enjoy that feeling of freedom which a boundless plain always inspires. Only life on the sea, with all its wonderful charms, is to be compared to a journey through the desert. In the midst of its vast and solitary expanse the traveller feels himself overwhelmed, and his imagination conjures up strange forms on the far horizon. The desert is to the Arab what the sea is to the sailor; for both, their proper element has a permanent and irresistible attraction. Old Abou Nabout, the leader of our caravan, rode on quietly in front, his eyes gazing steadfastly across the sandy plain, and dreams of his youth doubtless floated through his mind as his horse threw up clouds of sand with his hoofs.

THE Fates were unkind to the Balkan Peninsula. Because of its position, it was forced to stand in the path of the greatest racial movements of the world, and was thus the scene of savage racial struggles, and the depositary of residual shreds of nations surviving from great defeats or Pyrrhic victories and cherishing irreconcilable mutual hatreds. As if that were not enough of ill fortune imposed by geographical position, the great Roman Empire elected to come from its seat in the Italian Peninsula to die in the Balkan Peninsula, a long drawn-out death of many agonies, of many bloody disasters and desperate retrievals. For all the centuries of which history knows a blood-mist has hung over the Balkans; and for the centuries before the dawn of written history one may surmise that there was the same constant struggle of warring races.
We have progressed appreciably beyond the days of the old horseless carriage, which, it will be remembered, retained even the dashboard. To-day the modern automobile somewhat resembles, in its outlines, across between a decapod locomotive and a steam fire-engine, or at least something concerning the artistic appearance of which the layman has very grave doubts. The control of a restive horse, a cranky boat, or even a trolley-car on rails is difficult enough for the inexperienced, and there are many who would quail before making the attempt; but to the novice in charge of an automobile, some serious damage is likely enough to occur within an incredibly short space of time, particularly if he does not take into account the tremendous force and power which he controls merely by the moving of a tiny lever, or by the depressing of a pedal.

Foreword Reviews"Full of lived experience, this book ponders the question of our own animal relationship with the planet, between what we know and what we feel, between mind and body, instinct and intellect." Julia Bell, author of Massive and Hymnal"Her shimmering prose brings into sharp focus the beauty of the remote places where we can glimpse – and sometimes hear – what our planet was like before us. And what it might be in the silence that will come after the frenzy of human dominance." Margie OrfordRelating thirty years of living in and writing about some of the world's last remaining wild places, Latitudes is a thrilling and thought-provoking exploration of a changing planet. At once memoir, journal and travelogue of Earth's wildernesses, Latitudes ranges across the Antarctic, the Arctic, the savannahs and deserts of Africa, the Southern and Atlantic oceans and the boreal forests of Canada.Latitudes is a powerful, innovative book of creative non-fiction that tracks one writer's life-long experience of reckoning with an age of dramatic ecological loss.
