  • by Earle S Hotta
    £8.99

A friend once asked the author how many countries I had visited and what was on my bucket list, and his reply was that it wasn't filled with things or places, but with people like "The Walnut Man" or "The Albeeno Aborigine" and the Ladyboy in "Bangkok Confidential" that he had met along the way and the stories that they shared about themselves. If anything, a little bit of luck, patience, and an ear for listening have made all the difference in seeing the world through a different set of lenses. The richness of travel is in each footstep taken like walking el Camino de Santiago in Spain, where each day is a new adventure along an 800-kilometer trail filled with stories of personal challenge, hardships overcome, immense satisfaction, and a bookmark in the lives of people from all corners of the world. Each story, each memoir is merely a point in time in someone's life and the reward was having it handed to you as a gift.

  • by Gavin Francis
    £15.49

In a world increasingly preoccupied by borders, bridges celebrate the possibility of connection, allowing the flow of goods, people and ideas. Bridges are among our grandest physical structures with the power of transforming lives and economies, but we also stand (or fall) upon the simple arch of bones in our feet. Text is a bridge between writer and reader, and conversation builds bridges of understanding between minds. Dr Gavin Francis has spent his life fascinated by the power of bridges to improve human connection. In The Bridge Between Worlds he examines bridges both actual and metaphorical, on a journey through more than twenty countries, across four decades of travel. From Rome's Ponte Sant'Angelo to Brooklyn, Victoria Falls to London, Singapore to Siberia, this thought-provoking book reflects on connections between nations and between individuals. Francis demonstrates what the building of bridges has meant to our civilisation, how crossings can enrich our lives, and the price we pay when we tear them down.

What's the oldest and most consumed alcoholic beverage on earth? Beer, of course. And it might just be our more important invention.Since its invention 13,000 years ago, our love of beer has shaped everything from religious ceremonies to advertising, and architecture to bioengineering. The people who built the pyramids were paid in ale, the first fridge was built for beer not food, bacteria was discovered while investigating sour beer, Germany's beer halls hosted Hitler's rise to power, and brewer's yeast may yet be the answer to climate change. In The Meaning of Beer, award-winning beer writer Jonny Garrett tells the stories of these incredible human moments and inventions, taking readers to some of the best-known beer destinations in the world - Munich and Oktoberfest, Carlsberg Brewery's historic laboratory, St Louis and the home of Budweiser - as well as those lesser-known, from a 5,000 year old brewery in the Egyptian desert to Arctic Svalbard, home to the world's most northerly pub.Ultimately, this is not a book about how we made beer, but how beer made us.

Part 1 - France, Spain, Ceuta (North Africa), Morocco, Western Sahara, Mauritania, Mali, Niger, Chad, Central African Republic A Journey through the Unknown: Conquering the Impossible "Kypros Africa Adventure" is an enthralling memoir written by Kypros, an intrepid photographer and explorer who embarks on a perilous adventure across Africa in 1999. Armed with a former military Land Rover, Kypros sets off on an audacious journey from the Atlantic Ocean on Africa's west coast to the Indian Ocean on the east coast, traversing treacherous jungles and facing unimaginable dangers. At the outset, Kypros acknowledges the daunting nature of his endeavor, aware that he has the option to abandon his vehicle and take to the skies if circumstances become insurmountable. However, fueled by his adventurous spirit and determination, he chooses to forge ahead, taking small steps and pushing himself to the limits. Throughout the book, Kypros describes the hostile and unforgiving landscapes he encounters, where danger lurks at every turn. The author's raw and uncensored account reveals the harsh realities he faces, with over 600 pages filled with vivid descriptions and explicit language. Although he acknowledges the mistakes and shortcomings in his journey and writing, Kypros emphasizes that his actions and decisions were often made without prior experience or knowledge. As Kypros navigates his way through the violence-ridden jungles, he witnesses horrifying incidents, such as people being burnt alive inside their vehicles.Despite the overwhelming odds and the countless challenges he encounters, Kypros pushes forward, displaying incredible resilience and fortitude. The expedition finally concludes at Table Mountain in Cape Town, South Africa, in 2001. Kypros reflects on the incredible and life-threatening nature of his adventure, having covered an astounding distance of 38,500 kilometers alone through some of the most dangerous places on Earth. His journey serves as a testament to the human spirit's capacity for endurance and exploration. "A Journey through the Unknown: Conquering the Impossible" is not only an adrenaline-fueled account of a remarkable expedition but also a personal reflection on the author's triumphs and shortcomings. It invites readers to join Kypros on his wild and unforgettable journey, offering a glimpse into the untamed and unexplored corners of Africa. From the Chad section ... "Everyone tells me the animals are somewhere else. There are no animals, they have all been eaten" "No, I see lots by the water. The chimpanzees are in groups. They attack small people and try to fu*k the woman when they are alone". "Do they ever succeed? You mean they want sex with people?" "Yes, sometimes they find woman. If she fights they bite her neck and kill her". Sudan - "They murder someone to get married?"."No, they just cut off the penis". Central African Republic - "If you do get attacked when you leave here, look at the ground at all time and do not make eye contact. Let them take whatever they want and do not say or do anything. They may let you live, but never look at them". ... At dusk, the chief presented me with a large wooden bowl filled with a green paste."This is too much for me to eat," I said. "Eat whatever you like and leave the rest," the chief replied. As I finished picking through the green paste, I noticed everyone staring at me. Eventually, I realized they were waiting for me to hand them the bowl. I had presumed it was an extra generous serving, but the food had been intended for the entire village. I had eaten half of it, and the chief then took my plate and ate my leftovers. The others shared the remainder when he was finished. It dawned on me that I had unwittingly eaten the entire food supply for everyone in the village.
