This text focuses on the principles and methods of using growth layers formed in teeth and bones of mammals to make a judgement on essential traits of the animal's life history. It is intended for zoologists, wild-game biologists and zoo archaeologists.
This is a collection of national reports from most European countries on design-methods, as prescribed in more or less strict national codes or recommendations and so daily used in practice by consulting engineers and contractors.
This work features presentations by international experts on mine environment and ventilation. Topics covered include analysis and design of ventilation systems, coal bed methane and gas modelling, dust generation and control, and heat flow.
This research aimed to identify and understand mechanisms thar underlie the beneficial effect of ozonation on removal of pesticides and other micropollutants by Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) filtration. This allows optimization of the combination of these two processes, termed Biological Activated Carbon filtration. The study concluded that ozonation significantly improves removal of atrazine by GAC filtration not only due to the wellknown effect of oxidation of atrazine, but also due to the effect of partical oxidation of Background Organic Matter (BOM) present in water. Ozone-induced oxidation of BOM was found to improve adsorption of atrazine in GAC filters. Biodegradation of atrazine in these filters wasnot demonstrated. Higher GAC's adsorption capacity for atrazine and faster atrazine's mass transfer in filters with ozonated rather than non-ozonated influent were explained as due to ozonated BOM. Both can be attributed to enhanced biodegradability and reduced adsorbsbility of partially ozidated BOM compounds, resulting in their increased biodegradation and decreased adsorption in GAC filters.
This monograph seeks to strengthen the study of problems of mechanical vibrations and noise. It presents research covering such topics as structural damping.
Earth dams are the most common impoundment structures, with stringent requirements imposed on their design and construction. Modern design require accurate static and dynamic computations based on thorough analysis of stress-strain conditions, as ...
This volume comprises the proceedings of a symposium on marine mammal survey assessment methods, which took place in Seattle, Washington, USA.
This volume on the recharge of phreatic aquifiers in (semi-)arid areas includes coverage of: recharge principles, problems and developments; recharge from precopitation; recharge from intermittent flow; and recharge from permanent water bodies. Ca...
This book studies the impacts of various developed tools on the hydrodynamics of flow and transport mechanisms, illustrating this through a series of extensive numerical simulations of single and multiple realizations (Monte Carlo method).
Typically a large number of interests with conflicting requirements are involved in the management of a water system. The computer-based method of management introduced in this text - dynamic control - is designed to determine the most effective o...
A practical manual covering all aspects of this field, this informative book, compiled by researchers from Fugro, Delft Geotechnics and several other Dutch contractors, covers everything from pre-design to the use of completed structures.
Expounds the basics of the USSR-originating advanced method for construction of tunnels for various purposes with in-situ pressure moulded linings. Topics covered include practical tunnelling experience, specific requirements of concrete, operatio...
This text explores the spatial variation and seasonality in growth and reproduction of "Enhalus acoroides" Royle populations in the coastal waters off Cape Bolinao, NW Phillipines.
Arising from an international workshop, these papers discuss aspects of wind turbines and the landscape. Contributions cover areas including: harmonization of wind turbines with landscape; offshore wind farms and their economic and social impact.
This text describes topics discussed at the conference, including: tunnelling and construction in soft ground and rocks; geological investigations; tunnelling machines; planning for underground infrastructure; and safety issues.
Addressing the techno-socio-economic challenges involved in the protection, conservation, recycling and equitable utilization of water as an economic good, this text explores the linkages and dynamics of interactions involving water.
Topics covered in this text include: geology and structural geology; mechanics; dynamics of jointed and faulted rock; physical modelling and testing; constitutive modelling; seismicity and tectonics; instrumentation; hydraulics; and applications.
This work looks at the development of constitutive relations for geotechnical materials that, with the help of numerical models, have increased the ability to predict and to interpret the mechanical behaviour of geotechnical works.
This volume looks at many issues involved in the management of construction safety and health. It covers many different topics, such as an overview of health hazards in construction and the use of IT to help regulate public health and safety.
This collection of papers addresses a number of topics in hydrology tracing techniques including: protection of natural resources against pollution; the use of natural and artificial tracers.
This volume contains abstracts of all papers presented at the International Echinoderms Conferences, and complete papers of those which were submitted for publication and accepted upon recommendation of referees.
The objective of this text is to provide information on mill tailings and mine waste, and to discuss current and future issues facing the mining and environmental communities.
Incorporating case studies for easy revision, this text is the ideal source for those wishing to acquire specialized information on sustainable mining and international mining practices, with specific reference to America, Asia and Europe.
With contributions by Dutch experts in water defence research, this book opens with an overview of strategy and methodology on sea defences. Technical information on specific aspects like integral design, management and safety, are also included.
Topics in this international symposium on mining in the arctic included arctic mining in Raglan; analysis and prediction of water infiltration in underground, frozen placer mines; red dog mine-operations update and design of paste tailings disposa...
This book contains scientific papers covering the current situation of Varroatosis in Europe, the biology and behaviour of Varroa-mite, the parasite-host relationship, the secondary infection micro-organisms transferred from the Varroa in the hive, and diagnostic and therapeutic control methods.
A biosystematic study of one of three major groups of planarian flatworms, the marine triclads, or Maricola.
This book contains 33 papers, presented at the meeting "Integrated Crop protection in Cereals", on recent developments in research into integral control of invertebrate pests, diseases and weeds, together with economic appraisals of applying such research to model farming systems.
